Since its launch in 2022, OYU has grown from a local initiative into an important platform for Kazakhstan’s music scene, drawing a wider audience across Central Asia.

Kazakhstan has welcomed more international performers in recent years, including Jennifer Lopez, the Backstreet Boys, and Enrique Iglesias. OYU has taken a different approach. It has remained a festival without foreign headliners, keeping contemporary Kazakh music at the center of its program. Instead of competing with large international shows, the festival connects local artists with audiences of different generations and reflects the range and confidence of Kazakhstan’s music scene today.

The first OYU Fest took place in the summer of 2022, after the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Although the festival has never made political statements, it emerged during a period of growing public interest in Kazakhstan’s cultural identity, national language, and domestic music scene.

Artists who 15 to 20 years ago were often seen as niche or local performers now draw audiences of tens of thousands across Kazakhstan, including listeners outside ethnic Kazakh communities.

OYU 2026 Brings Glastonbury Weather to Kazakhstan’s Coachella

This year, OYU expanded to a two-day format for the first time and welcomed several thousand visitors. The lineup brought together emerging artists, Kazakh-language pop performers, indie musicians, rappers, R&B acts, K-pop groups, and long-established singers known to several generations in Kazakhstan.

The range of performers showed how far Kazakhstan’s contemporary music scene has developed, from newcomers to established names.

The festival opened with torrential rain, recalling OYU’s first edition. At that first festival, strong winds tore down tents. Performers sang on a soaked stage, and audiences danced through the downpour to songs by Zoloto and hits from Kairat Nurtas, one of Kazakhstan’s best-known pop stars. The weather became part of the festival’s identity.

This year, forecasts predicted only light showers. Shortly before the festival began, however, Almaty was hit by what felt like a tropical downpour. Visitors arrived at the festival grounds completely soaked, although organizers distributed free rain ponchos at the entrance. People sheltered beneath temporary canopies and joked that OYU, once dubbed Kazakhstan’s Coachella, had unexpectedly become Kazakhstan’s Glastonbury, where rain and muddy ground are part of the experience.

The mostly young audience was undeterred. By evening, the rain had eased, and by the time ARO, the fourth performer on the lineup, took the stage, it had stopped. The festival hosts jokingly called him a “rain whisperer,” noting that showers had ended just as he began performing more than once before.

On the first day, audiences saw performances by On Alty, Almás, Zakryty Klub, Sadraddin, Kunzharyq, ALPHA, Yenlik, Berkut & Aisha, and others. The second day featured dosm., Ken Dala, abdr., Dequine, Ringo, Orynkhan Rakhimbekov, Roza Rymbaeva, and the independent music association Qazaq Indie.

The lineup showed the range of Kazakhstan’s contemporary music scene. Festivalgoers heard Kazakh-language pop, hip-hop, R&B, indie, folk-influenced acts, and Q-pop, with many artists moving easily between styles.

A few years ago, such a mix on one stage would have seemed unlikely. OYU has helped bring different audiences into the same space, across language, age, and genre lines. The festival no longer feels divided between mainstream and alternative audiences. It feels like one music community.

By Sunday, the rain had stopped, and the festival grounds were busier. Visitors moved between the food courts, activity zones, and stages throughout the day. Families with children, young couples, groups of friends, visitors with pets, and Almaty’s fashion-conscious crowd gave the second day a more relaxed summer atmosphere. Many came for the setting as much as the music.

People stayed between performances, explored the grounds, and danced through the sets.

The emotional high point came when Rymbaeva took the stage. She first rose to prominence during the Soviet era and remains one of Kazakhstan’s most respected performers. As she performed her best-known songs, the audience began singing along. For a moment, the festival took on the atmosphere of a family celebration, with strangers joined by songs many had known since childhood.

Many young people were moved to tears. Rymbaeva’s songs are part of the memory of several generations: the same melodies their parents, grandparents, and in some cases great-grandparents once danced to.

The Philosophy Behind OYU

According to organizers, OYU began as a project about contemporary music in Central Asia, with Kazakhstan as its main focus. In five years, it has become one of the country’s leading music events.

The festival shows how Kazakhstan’s local music scene has become an attraction in its own right. Its sound draws on different languages and styles, with Kazakh-language pop, R&B, indie, and electronic music all finding space on the same stage.

Yenlik is one of the clearest examples. A regular OYU performer and one of Kazakhstan’s most visible new-generation artists, she combines contemporary R&B, pop, and the Kazakh language. Her appearance on COLORSxSTUDIOS gave Kazakh-language pop a wider international platform.

For emerging musicians, the OYU stage offers access to a much larger audience. Some performers arrive with small followings and leave having played before thousands. Several debut performers later posted emotional messages of thanks on social media.

The word OYU refers to ornamentation and traditional patterns, one of the most recognizable symbols of Kazakh culture. The festival’s central image is a flower, a simple sign of growth that suits the current moment in Kazakhstan’s music scene.

The scene now stretches beyond pop, with space for indie artists and experiments in folk-influenced and electronic sound. The festival’s strength is that it gives these styles a shared stage without forcing them into one format.

OYU also pays close attention to the visitor experience. The site included activity and rest areas, with free drinking water available throughout the venue. Organizers also provided spaces for families with children and accessibility measures for people with disabilities. Every performance was accompanied by a sign-language interpreter.

Visitors came with friends, family members, or alone, and the festival gave them a sense of belonging to the same space.

The popularity of OYU has grown quickly and reflects rising interest in Kazakh-language music. The festival also gives younger audiences a cultural event that feels local and current.

Social media users may still compare OYU with Glastonbury or Coachella. After five years, the festival has developed its own identity. It is rooted in Kazakhstan’s traditions, but it also reflects the country’s changing urban culture.

For young performers, OYU is now a place where careers can begin, audiences can discover new artists, and musicians can share a stage with singers they grew up listening to. For audiences, it offers a rare mix of generations, languages, and musical tastes in one setting.

Five years after its launch, OYU has become a portrait of Kazakhstan’s new music scene: local in identity, open in style, and increasingly confident on its own terms.

‘ The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties ’

‘ Some details of this article were extracted from the following source timesca.com ’

OYU Fest returned to Almaty’s Pervomaysky Ponds for its fifth-anniversary edition, marking another step in its rise as one of Kazakhstan’s leading contemporary music festivals.
