What started as a dream continues to grow thanks to artists, collaborators, sponsors, and a community that believes in the power of music.<\/span><\/h3>\n

From Sept. 13 to Oct. 17, the 3rd\u00a0Annual Hispanic Music Festival will bring new events and performers to Pittsburg, giving audiences a taste of Latin rhythms, mariachi music, a hit Broadway musical, and more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Festival\u00a0founders\u00a0are\u00a0Isaac Hernandez, an adjunct lecturer and piano accompanist in the Pitt State Music Department, and his wife Herrera, an academic advisor\u00a0in the Office of\u00a0Student Success\u00a0\u2014\u00a0both graduates of Pitt State.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis festival gives us the opportunity to share traditions and\u00a0bridge different cultures\u00a0through music,\u201d said Hernandez.<\/span>\u00a0“What started as a dream continues to grow thanks to our artists, collaborators, sponsors, and a community that believes in the ower of music.”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The festival is sponsored in part by Arvest Bank. Other susinesses and individuals who wish to donate in support of the festival may contact\u00a0<\/span>Mary Jo Dancer<\/span><\/a>, director of development, at 620-235-6127.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New this year: a passport that will give festival attendees the chance to win festival merchandise by visiting participating businesses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sept. 15 \u2013 Choir Fiesta<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Bicknell Family Center for the Arts<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Area\u00a0high school choirs\u00a0may apply to be accepted for this new event. Choirs each will perform a song of their own and then will\u00a0join together\u00a0for one final song; musical selections will be by Hispanic composers.\u00a0To date, six choirs have registered to attend with about 150 members. The cap will\u00a0be\u00a0200 members.\u00a0\u00a0The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will be free and open to the public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sept. 17 \u2013 1, 2, 3\u00a0(Uno, Dos, Tres!), Andres<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Memorial\u00a0Auditorium<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0– North Lawn (outdoors)<\/span><\/h3>\n

This\u00a0<\/span>husband-and-wife<\/span>\u00a0duo that creates children\u2019s music in both English and Spanish have performed for audiences across the U.S. and in Puerto Rico, Panama, and Mexico and are winners of the Best Latin Children\u2019s Album category at the Latin Grammy Awards.\u00a0<\/span>Now,\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0heading to Pittsburg.\u00a0<\/span>Two shows will be held:\u00a0<\/span>an indoor performance<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for area elementary schools during the day<\/span>\u00a0(registration\u00a0<\/span>required<\/span>)<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0free<\/span>\u00a0outdoor performance\u00a0<\/span>for the public\u00a0<\/span>starting at 6 p.m. on the north lawn<\/span>\u00a0(bring\u00a0<\/span>lawn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>chairs<\/span>\u00a0and blankets).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Sept. 19 \u2013 Kansas City Latin Jazz Orchestra\u00a0and Pittsburg Hispanic Banda<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Our Lady of Lourdes Church and\u00a0ArtWalk in\u00a0Downtown Pittsburg<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Two performances\u00a0will be featured\u00a0in two locations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At 3 p.m., Banda Camp and Pittsburg Hispanic Banda,\u00a0comprised\u00a0of Pitt State alumni, students, and friends,\u00a0will perform as part of\u00a0Pittsburg ArtWalk, held on Broadway between Fourth and Seventh streets.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At 6 p.m., the Kansas City Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform at the Community Festival Hispano, held\u00a0outdoors\u00a0at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pablo Sanhueza is “Kansas City’s Heart & Soul of Latin Music” and is the region’s premier Salsa & Latin Jazz percussionist, bandleader, and educator. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, Pablo has been on the front line of Latin Jazz and salsa music in the Midwest since 1996, leading and mentoring three generations of musicians. In 2025, he was recognized as a Missouri Living Tradition\u2019s Artist, becoming the first jazz musician to receive the accolade.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, Sanhueza founded the KCLJO and Latin Jazz Institute. KCLJO integrates graduates and apprentices of the Latin Jazz Studies Program, which presents established professionals, master musicians, and international visiting artists.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oct. 1 \u2013 Wind Ensemble Concert<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Bicknell Family Center for the Arts<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This concert will feature the Pittsburg State University Wind Ensemble.\u00a0This concert is free and open to the public\u00a0and will feature\u00a0music from\u00a0a variety of Hispanic\u00a0composers, including a\u00a0commissioned\u00a0work by\u00a0Mexican composer Rodrigo Torres. With an MFA from Dartmouth College, he is a multi-instrumentalist who performs in different genres and styles and whose practice spans radio broadcasting and production, performing in rock bands,\u00a0writing for\u00a0orchestra, and composing for film and theater.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oct. 2 \u2013\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>Mariachi Coraz\u00f3n de Oro<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Gorilla Village<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

During the day, the\u00a0<\/span>Mariachi Coraz\u00f3n de Oro from Mayberry Middle School in Wichita<\/span>\u00a0will perform for music students at Pittsburg Community Middle School and will conduct a clinic for area music teachers.\u00a0At 5 p.m.,\u00a0the group will be the featured entertainers at La\u00a0Celebracion\u00a0at Gorilla Village on the campus of Pittsburg State University, hosted by Hispanics of Today student organization. The evening event will include food trucks and\u00a0activities, and\u00a0is free and open to the public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A showcase of music\u00a0by Hispanic composers will be\u00a0performed by community\u00a0members,\u00a0Pitt State students, faculty, staff, and alumni is planned.\u00a0The concert\u00a0is free and open to the public. It\u00a0will begin at 7:30 p.m.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Oct. 15\u00a0\u2013 17\u00a0\u2013 \u201cIn the Heights\u201d<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0
<\/span>Memorial Auditorium<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u201cIn the Heights\u201d is a Tony-winning musical written by Lin Manuel Miranda that celebrates the vibrant\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Dominican-American<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>community of Washington Heights in Upper Manhattan, New York. More than just a musical, it is also a celebration of local talent. Featuring members of our own community, this high-energy story about chasing dreams and the bonds that keep us together will be directed by Breana Clark, with musical direction by Isaac Hernandez.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Performances are planned for 7 p.m. each evening.
