John Goodman<\/a> won\u2019t be manning the grill at any BBQs this summer.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t grill anymore because I don\u2019t drink anymore,\u201d The Righteous Gemstones<\/em><\/a>star, 74, said in a July 8 Instagram<\/a> video for London restaurant Simpson\u2019s in the Strand, owned by famed restaurateur \u2014 and Goodman\u2019s friend \u2014 Jeremy King<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n As Goodman explained, grilling \u201cwas a good excuse to get drunk \u2014 stand in front of something hot.\u201d<\/p>\n The Conners<\/em><\/a> actor, who quit drinking in 2007<\/a>, previously told PEOPLE<\/a> that he decided to give up alcohol after \u201ca long weekend of \u2018playing golf\u2019 with my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBy the time Sunday morning rolled around, I was shaking \u2014 I was still drinking, but I was shaking,\u201d he said. \u201cI called my wife [Anna Beth Goodman<\/a>], which was like turning myself into the Gestapo. She made some phone calls, we got me into a treatment center, and I detoxed there and decided I liked the feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n He also kickstarted a weight-loss journey, previously sharing that he was \u201cpushing 400\u201d<\/a> lbs. at his heaviest, back in 2011. I\u2019m getting to the age where I can\u2019t afford to sit still anymore. And it gives me the energy to work, \u2018cause work is very draining.\u201d<\/p>\n Goodman compared alcoholism with eating, explaining, \u201cI think you\u2019re trying to fill a hole that can\u2019t be filled unless it\u2019s filled with goodness,\u201d he told the outlet.<\/p>\n \u201cYou just acknowledge that it\u2019s there.
