Tomi Adeyemi, the author of the bestselling fantasy \u201cChildren of Blood and Bone<\/a>,\u201d isn\u2019t planning to see the forthcoming film adaptation \u2014 even though she co-wrote it.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, the Nigerian American author posted a video on TikTok<\/a> addressing fans who have been asking her the same question, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you post about the adaptation of your first film adaptation anymore?\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work,\u201d the author wrote in what appear to be screenshots of a group chat. \u201cI have not seen the film, and I will not watch it.\u201d <\/p>\n

The adaptation of the first installment of Adeyemi\u2019s \u201cLegacy of Or\u00efsha\u201d fantasy trilogy is slated to hit theaters in January 2027. Gina Prince-Bythewood \u2014 who wrote and directed \u201cLove & Basketball\u201d and helmed \u201cThe Woman King<\/a>\u201d \u2014 is directing. The film stars Amandla Stenberg<\/a>, Thuso Mbedu, Tosin Cole, Damson Idris, Cynthia Erivo<\/a>, Lashana Lynch, Regina King, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Viola Davis.<\/p>\n

Alongside the screenshots of her comments in the group chat, she shared a February 2025 exchange with Stenberg that shows the author severing ties with the actor. <\/p>\n

Adeyemi shared only her final message to Stenberg, which reads, \u201cDo not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me. Do not call me.\u201d That exchange is followed by a notification that she blocked Stenberg, who plays Princess Amari in the upcoming fantasy flick. <\/p>\n

Stenberg, who played Rue in \u201cHunger Games<\/a>,\u201d Starr Carter in \u201cThe Hate U Give<\/a>\u201d and, recently, Verosha \u201cOsha\u201d Aniseya and Mae-ho \u201cMae\u201d Aniseya in Disney\u2019s \u201cStar Wars\u201d series \u201cThe Acolyte,\u201d had been getting flack from readers of the series, who claimed colorism was an issue while casting the movie. <\/p>\n

In February 2025, Stenberg posted a since-deleted nine-minute TikTok addressing the controversy and told followers that Adeyemi had given the actor her blessing when cast as the series\u2019 princess. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am four months into training for \u2018Children of Blood and Bone\u2019 and I am getting my ass whooped,\u201d Stenberg joked in the video, per BET<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year was mostly defined for me, honestly, by contending with what it felt like to receive racist death threats just for existing in the \u2018Star Wars\u2019 universe<\/u><\/a>, and that was a really difficult thing for me to move through,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut honestly, it feels so much more painful for me to feel like I\u2019m at odds with my own community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stenberg said that she considers her skin tone when navigating her career choices and would \u201cnever go after a role\u201d she didn\u2019t feel well suited for. \u201cI know that colorism is an insidious system that relentlessly impacts every facet of entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor continued that it was actually a meeting with the \u201cChildren of Blood and Bone\u201d author that gave her the confidence to pursue the role. <\/p>\n

\u201cI had the opportunity to meet Tomi, the novelist, for the first time. \u2026 And she goes, \u2018Amandla, I want you to know that when you were a little girl and you were cast as Rue in \u201cThe Hunger Games,\u201d and people said that Rue\u2019s death wouldn\u2019t be as sad because you\u2019re a Black girl \u2014 that inspired me to write this series so that Black girls like you and Black girls of all shades could have a story written about them,\u2019\u201d Stenberg said in the video. \u201cWe started crying, and I said to myself, \u2018God wants me here.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Representatives for Stenberg, Adeyemi and Prince-Bythewood did not immediately respond to The Times\u2019 request for comment. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
