The Royals\u2019 draft room at Kauffman Stadium will sit empty this weekend, despite the MLB Draft beginning Saturday.<\/p>\n

Blame it on Lionel Messi.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Well, it\u2019s not really Messi\u2019s fault, but because his Argentina team plays in the World Cup quarterfinal<\/a> at Kansas City Stadium (n\u00e9e Arrowhead) on Saturday, the logistics of working out of Kauffman Stadium were impossible for the Royals.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Instead, the Royals\u2019 executives and scouts will convene in Surprise, Arizona, at the team\u2019s spring-training home.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a draft room here, (but) we can\u2019t be here,\u201d Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said. \u201cThere\u2019s a (World Cup) game on July 11, and our draft is July 11, so we couldn\u2019t be in our draft room that day.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is a large swath of security around Arrowhead Stadium because of the World Cup, so even when there aren\u2019t matches, draft preparation is affected.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the days leading up to the draft, there would be days impacted by the World Cup, so we just decided to move it to Arizona, just for simplicity of not having to worry about logistics, dancing around the World Cup,\u201d Picollo said.<\/p>\n
