Keri Russell has spent nearly three decades collecting industry respect without ever collecting the trophy that\u2019s supposed to come with it. On July 8, 2026, the Television Academy revealed this year\u2019s Emmy nominees, and Russell\u2019s name showed up again: her fifth nomination for The Diplomat, and the eighth of her career once her nods for The Americans are counted in. What\u2019s still missing from that tally is an actual win.<\/p>\n
She\u2019s not the only one carrying that particular streak. Steve Carell is on the same list of respected TV veterans who\u2019ve built entire careers, and loyal audiences, without an Emmy in hand \u2013 a group that gets harder to explain the more nominations pile up around them.<\/p>\n
Russell has made peace with the pattern in public before. Asked about being nominated without winning, she\u2019s said it\u2019s \u201csuch a cool thing to be nominated\u201d, and that she\u2019s \u201calways secretly relieved\u201d when she doesn\u2019t have to give a speech.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s ceremony has a notable first of its own: the 78th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the first woman to emcee the show in 15 years, airing live from Los Angeles in September.<\/p>\n

When Felicity premiered in 1998, you probably remember exactly where you were when she cut those curls and sparked debate. 28 years later, she\u2019s still answering hair questions \u2013 just for different shows.<\/p>\n
Russell recently told People<\/a> that she and her friends talk often about Hollywood\u2019s surgery pressure: \u201cPlastic surgery is having such a moment right now \u2014 men, women, 20-year-olds. I mean, it is around.\u201d She didn\u2019t name names. She didn\u2019t need to. \u201cWe\u2019re inundated with these movie stars,\u201d she said. \u201cEven though they might be 50 or 60 years old, they look amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n On watching herself in The Diplomat, she\u2019s been candid too: she doesn\u2019t see herself the way the camera does, and finds it strange that looking the way she does on the show counts as unusual at all.<\/p>\n The Felicity haircut backlash still shadows her, decades later. She\u2019s recalled JJ Abrams pitching the storyline \u2014 a breakup, then the classic post-breakup chop \u2014 and agreeing without hesitation. What she didn\u2019t expect was the hysteria that followed, including strangers stopping her on the street to tell her she was prettier before. <\/p>\n In a July chat on Imagine Entertainment\u2019s Instagram<\/a>, she recalled JJ Abrams pitching the storyline: \u201cWe have this idea that the boyfriend breaks up with you, and then, like college girls do\u2026 you go and cut your hair. Would you be willing to do that?\u2019 I said, \u2018Yeah, of course.\u2019 And so we did it, and there was this crazy backlash.\u201d Later, she added, \u201cI did not expect all the hysteria,\u201d and, worse, \u201cStrangers did come up to me on the street and say things like, \u2018You were so pretty before you cut your hair.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat long hair is how I was identified. So, it was nice to be out of that,\u201d she told W<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n The Diplomat Season 3 even winks at the reputation directly, with Russell\u2019s character batting away comments about her hair not looking effortlessly put-together.<\/p>\n Russell\u2019s run goes back further than Felicity \u2013 she started on The Mickey Mouse Club alongside Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling, and has since moved through The Americans, Mission: Impossible and Planet of the Apes. Off-screen, she\u2019s been with The Americans co-star Matthew Rhys since 2014; the two share a son, and Russell also has two children from a previous marriage.<\/p>\n Asked about how her career has unfolded, Keri Russell tends to downplay the plan behind it: she\u2019s called herself lucky rather than strategic, crediting good opportunities over any grand design. \u201cI haven\u2019t had some great plan. \u2026 I\u2019ve been incredibly lucky and had some really good opportunities and experiences. There\u2019s no rhyme or reason,\u201d she told Variety<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n The Emmys air in September.
