{"id":2496836,"date":"2026-07-10T18:28:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T18:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2496836"},"modified":"2026-07-10T18:28:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T18:28:43","slug":"summerville-town-council-delays-open-container-zone-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/summerville-town-council-delays-open-container-zone-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Summerville Town Council delays open container zone again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-breakout=\"1\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>SUMMERVILLE \u2014 Town Council once again postponed a final decision on a proposed open container district to allow <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/summervilledream.org\/\">Summerville Dream<\/a>, a cohort of small business owners and entrepreneurs, to return with an updated plan that responds to feedback from residents and local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The July 9 vote to delay the decision came after it was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.postandcourier.com\/journal-scene\/summerville-outdoor-entertainment-district-ordinance-postponed-july\/article_9b8cdd5e-801f-4e9e-89c4-dc3e5ac2722a.html\">delayed at Town Council\u2019s June meeting<\/a> due to the absence of two council members and a desire to address concerns from residents about the scope of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Under the current proposal, only beer and wine would be permitted outdoors, with customers being allowed one beverage in an approved disposable cup of no more than 16 ounces. She pointed to a recent push for roadway safety improvements along West Richardson Avenue and called the proposal for the open container district \u201cironic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we add the alcohol to the mix, we&#8217;re going to have the effects that go with it, and we can&#8217;t fool ourselves with that,\u201d she said. \u201cWe&#8217;re going to have trash. \u2026 This open consumption of beer and wine is going to lead to buzzed people, and buzzed people are drunk people who don&#8217;t make good decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"2\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Resident Adrian Kwist, who has lived in Summerville for over 60 years, said it would create a burden for local police and complicate cleanup around the area.<\/p>\n<p>Councilwoman Tiffany Johnson-Wilson said at Council\u2019s June meeting that the she had drawn a map to decrease the size of the zone, though it was not included in the agenda for the July 9 meeting.
