Huey Lewis<\/a> shared just how much his relationship to music has changed in a recent podcast interview. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m basically deaf,\u201d the former lead singer of Huey Lewis and the News said in an episode of the \u201cInside of You\u201d<\/a> podcast released Tuesday. \u201cMy life has changed immeasurably. I can\u2019t hear music. Music is not part of my life anymore, which is a hard pill to swallow.\u201d <\/p>\n Lewis explained that he uses a cochlear implant to help him hear and understand speech, but he is unable to distinguish pitch because of the way the device operates. <\/p>\n \u201cMy cochlear implant, it breaks everything down into digital bits so I can understand,\u201d he said. \u201cSpeech is easier to listen to than music. Music occurs in all frequencies, with overtones and harmonics and everything. It comes at you in a lot of different frequencies, so it distorts for me … It makes pitch impossible to hear.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201dThe Power of Love<\/a>\u201d singer explained that because of this, he can no longer enjoy music. <\/p>\n \u201cWhen I cook or I have people over for dinner, I always used to play them music,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a great collection of old big band stuff and old New Orleans jazz and I don\u2019t play it at all anymore. … It\u2019s weird. I can hear the beat, I know what\u2019s going on. But I can\u2019t enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMusic used to be so much fun,\u201d he added. But \u201cit just ends up being frustrating for me when I can\u2019t enjoy it. I can\u2019t feel the warmth.\u201d <\/p>\n Lewis previously discussed<\/a> his struggles with hearing loss with The Times. The \u201cHip to Be Square\u201d singer said his Meniere\u2019s disease diagnosis in early 2018 was \u201cbrutal.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cWhen it first happened, I thought I might as well kill myself,\u201d Lewis said in the 2020 interview, which described him as being \u201csurprisingly upbeat\u201d for someone whose life was so deeply affected by the diagnosis. Meniere\u2019s disease is a disorder of the inner ear that can cause severe dizziness, ringing in the ears, hearing loss and ears feeling congested, according to the NIH<\/a>. Not much is known about its causes and there is not yet a cure. <\/p>\n While it\u2019s clear that Lewis misses aspects of his musician life, he also appears to appreciate having time for his other passions since his life doesn\u2019t revolve around being on the road performing 75 to 100 shows a year. <\/p>\n \u201cI fish a lot,\u201d Lewis said in the \u201cInside of You\u201d podcast. \u201cI love to fly fish and I love Mother Nature. I get out there by myself in a stream and I\u2019m conducting nature with my fly rod and it\u2019s just a wonderful thing.
