\n\tFiona Apple<\/a> is largely out of the public eye these days, but the singer-songwriter gave a rare update in a new video, expressing her thoughts on the state of the world.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s the middle of the night and I was just writing and I couldn\u2019t sleep,\u201d Apple says in the video. \u201cAnd I just all the sudden got overtaken with this urge to reach out. You haven\u2019t seen me in a while, because this kind of thing, I\u2019m just really, really uncomfortable with it nowadays.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe video was uploaded by Zelda Hallman, Apple\u2019s roommate and best friend. \u201cShe\u2019s been trying to find a truthful way to speak to the enormity of what\u2019s happening in the world, from the horror in Gaza and Sudan, to the cruelty being aimed at trans kids, to the assault on women\u2019s bodily autonomy, to the abuse and terror being inflicted on immigrants and their families, to the erosion of voting rights and civil liberties, to the disappearance of Indigenous and Black children,\u201d Hallman wrote in the caption, \u201cso often met with silence, and to so much more suffering and injustice than can be named or addressed in a single statement.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tApple continued in the video: \u201cI wonder if you\u2019re wondering if I\u2019m even trying to write about what\u2019s going on in the world right now. And I just wanted to tell you that I am. I\u2019m trying. I\u2019m really struggling with it. If you\u2019re writing about yourself, it\u2019s one thing. Nobody can tell you that you\u2019re saying it wrong, nobody can get let down. You\u2019re the authority. But when it concerns what\u2019s happening to other people \u2026 it just becomes so important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe went on to talk about the \u201cendless barrage of horrors\u201d in the world, and her attempt at capturing it in a song. \u201cMaybe I\u2019m letting perfect get in the way of good,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to focus, and when you do focus, I just keep second and third and 10th and millionth guessing myself, if I\u2019m the one to say it, or if I\u2019m saying it right. I just didn\u2019t want you to think that I was turning a blind eye or that I didn\u2019t see what was going on or that I didn\u2019t care. I fucking care.\u00a0I know not everybody\u2019s expecting something from me, but I\u2019m expecting something from me.\u201d<\/p>\n
