Randolph Mantooth<\/strong>, best known for playing firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on the hit 1970s NBC series Emergency!<\/em>, has died. He was 80.<\/p>\n

Mantooth died on Thursday, July 9, at a hospice facility in Ventura, California, his brother Donald Mantooth<\/strong>, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.<\/a>\u00a0 Donald said the actor had been \u201cill for a number of years and kept getting thinner and thinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor rose to fame in 1972 when he was cast as the quick-witted but courageous Johnny Gage opposite Kevin Tighe<\/strong>\u2019s Roy DeSoto on Emergency!<\/em>, the groundbreaking drama created by Jack Webb<\/strong> and Robert A. Cinader.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The series followed the firefighters and paramedics of Los Angeles County Fire Department\u2019s fictional Station 51 and ran for six seasons through 1977 before returning for a series of TV movies.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tGeneral Hospital\u2019s Johnny Wactor has died at the age of 37. His mom, Scarlett Wactor, told TMZ on Sunday, May 26, that Johnny had been killed in Los Angeles the previous day. Johnny was allegedly with his coworker when they spotted three men attempting to steal his catalytic converter. Scarlett told the outlet that Johnny [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Before landing the career-defining role, Mantooth admitted he had no idea what a paramedic was.<\/p>\n

During a 2013 interview for the Television Academy Foundation\u2019s The Interviews<\/em> series, Mantooth recalled finding out his character was a paramedic, and his first reaction was,\u201d\u2019What the hell is a paramedic?’\u201d He further noted, \u201cAt that time, there were only [a handful] in all of California.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

He also revealed that he was initially hesitant to take the role because it meant cutting his hair.<\/p>\n

Emergency!<\/em> proved to be much more than a television hit. When the series started, there were only 12 paramedic units operating across North America. Within three years, 46 U.S. states had passed laws allowing paramedics to practice emergency medicine, and within a decade, more than half of Americans lived within 10 minutes of a paramedic rescue or ambulance unit. The show\u2019s influence has long been credited with helping raise awareness of and support for modern emergency medical services.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the series\u2019 legacy, Mantooth acknowledged the important influence the show had.<\/p>\n
