\n\tThe just-released Loveland<\/em> is Suki Waterhouse<\/a>\u2018s third album, but that doesn\u2019t mean she\u2019s finding the creative process any easier. \u201cThe more you know, the less you know,\u201d she says in a new episode of the Rolling Stone Studio<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s so much more expectation on yourself.\u201d Either way, it\u2019s her best work yet, a major-label debut full of hooks, organic production, and razor-sharp lyrics that grapple, in part, with what Waterhouse calls \u201ca seismic change in myself\u201d \u2014 becoming a mom.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHer collaborators on the album include producer Aaron Dessner<\/a> of the National<\/a>, hit songwriter Amy Allen<\/a> (she co-wrote Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s \u201cEspresso<\/a>\u201c), Semisonic\u2019s Dan Wilson, and, for one track, Mick Fleetwood<\/a> on drums.\u00a0In the new episode of the Rolling Stone Studio, Waterhouse sits down with senior writers Brian Hiatt and Angie Martoccio to break down the making of Loveland<\/em> and more. Here are some highlights from the discussion.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\u201cBack in Love\u201d is about emerging from the identity crisis she experienced after giving birth to her daughter two years ago\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cFor me, it felt like the first time I kind of realized: I\u2019m back in love,\u201d says Waterhouse, who welcomed her first child with longtime partner Robert Pattinson<\/a> in 2024. \u201cI can be all these things at once, and I am. And actually the things that I was afraid of, I don\u2019t think I have to be afraid of anymore. I think being a parent has given me more love. It\u2019s actually helped me refine my own happiness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\tTaylor Swift once described Waterhouse as \u201cthe wildest person I know who I would also trust to keep any secret\u201d <\/strong>\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cI actually remember where I was when I saw that she\u2019d written that,\u201d Waterhouse says. \u201cI was lying in bed somewhere on tour. Like, how has this happened?\u201d And what, exactly, did she do in front of Swift to earn the distinction? \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be telling you that. I wouldn\u2019t be able to say. I think I\u2019m wild in spirit. I\u2019m not \u2014 look, I\u2019m not too crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tWaterhouse traded favors with Mick Fleetwood, who plays drums on her album\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cI had this kind of crazy idea \u2014 I guess it was sort of like\u00a0Daisy Jones and the Six,<\/a><\/em>\u201d she says, referring to the series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid\u2019s 2019 book, in which Waterhouse starred. \u201cHow could I ever get Mick Fleetwood to drum on one of my songs? So I reached out to Mick and said, \u2018Would you be interested, possibly, please, would you ever be interested in drumming on \u201cMorals\u201d?\u2019 And he films everything, so I got so many videos sent from Hawaii where he has his studio. He did a bunch of amazing takes.\u201d Fleetwood, it turned out, has a collaborative album of his own in progress. \u201cIt was like, \u2018You drum on my record, I\u2019ll do a song for your record.\u2019 He flew his producer over to New York, actually, and we did all the vocals in New York too.\u201d She\u2019s still never never met him in person: \u201cHe was leaving Hawaii for the Harry Styles show. That was the only time I think I would\u2019ve been able to catch him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tAaron Dessner was totally into using a demo vocal that Waterhouse recorded while sick\t<\/h3>\n

\n\tWaterhouse traveled to Dessner\u2019s Long Pond Studio in upstate New York, where Swift, Noah Kahan<\/a>, Gracie Abrams, and many others have recorded. \u201cIt\u2019s such a strange and surreal thing, pulling up to Long Pond, which is obviously such a famous studio where so many of my heroes have made such incredible music,\u201d she says. \u201cI kind of fell asleep in the car and opened my eyes and there\u2019s that beautiful cabin in the woods.\u201d When Waterhouse told him she wanted to use demo vocals instead of a pristine take, he agreed right away: \u201cHe\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, sure.\u2019 Some other producers would be like, \u2018No, you\u2019re using my amazing microphone, not the SM7.\u2019 But he was so cool about it. And he said, \u2018Yeah, [the National] have a song where our singer was really, really sick as well, and we loved it, and it was great.\u2019 He\u2019s so egoless. It\u2019s so different when you work with a producer who\u2019s also an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tHer first big-venue gig, opening for Father John Misty, was a disaster\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cI was in the deep end, definitely,\u201d she says, of her 2022 tour with the mercurial singer-songwriter. \u201cI learned so much, honestly, by just failing a lot. I did such a bad job. It was like my worst show. I didn\u2019t really know how bad the sound was, and I was really excited. I got off stage and my managers were like, \u2018That was really bad.\u2019 So it was actually quite harrowing. But I had a great time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tShe loved interviewing BTS\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cI had a script and I went very much off-script, and I kept poking them and asking them stuff,\u201d she says of her Spotify interview<\/a> with BTS<\/a> earlier this year. \u201cThey were so down for me. They\u2019re hilarious \u2014 they have such a sweet banter with each other. Way more relaxed than maybe I would\u2019ve thought\u2026 They love music, they have great taste in music, and they\u2019re hilarious. I really enjoyed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\tShe had a carefully curated rap playlist for childbirth\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cLudacris was on it. Some Biggie Smalls. Ja Rule \u2014 quite a big favorite. Busta Rhymes. But I do remember the doctor being like, \u2018You guys are really chill.’\u201d That soundtrack was only part of the production, she notes: \u201cRob was having to hold so many things, \u2019cause I had a video camera, a UE Boom [speaker], like three different types of cameras that I was trying to get him to capture on. And I think he lost the UE Boom after. But he was just holding so many things.\u201d (True to form, she later asked Dessner to create a 50 Cent vibe for her new song \u201cAlmost.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n\t\tAsked to name the greatest songs ever made, Waterhouse cites T. Rex\u2019s \u201cCosmic Dancer\u201d first \u2014 because she walked past Marc Bolan\u2019s grave every day on the way to school\t<\/h3>\n

\n\t\u201cI would get off the tube at Barnes station every day,\u201d she says, recalling her school years in London. \u201cHe died right there. So I would have this moment every day walking past his grave in my school uniform, and I would always stand there and listen to his songs. His music reminds me of being a teenager and walking to school and feeling kind of like part of him every day.\u201d Next is Judee Sill\u2019s \u201cJesus Was a Cross Maker,<\/a>\u201d which prompts a revelation: \u201cI was trying to make a movie about Judee Sill. I spoke to a bunch of her friends. I have a lot of unheard recordings from her.\u201d Then \u201cSome Velvet Morning\u201d by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra; the Magnetic Fields\u2019 \u201cAsleep and Dreaming,\u201d which she once got to sing with Stephin Merritt himself (\u201cI actually can\u2019t believe that happened. He\u2019s like the sweetest man ever,\u201d she says); and the Beach Boys\u2019 \u201cGod Only Knows.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\tThe album closes with \u201cMy Favorite Weirdo,\u201d which is Pattinson\u2019s favorite track\t<\/h3>\n

\n\tThe heartfelt closer is about Waterhouse and her partner being apart for work. \u201cSince I\u2019ve had my daughter, we\u2019ve both been on this whirlwind, and he\u2019s been making lots of movies, and that means not always being together, which is something that I find difficult and grapple with,\u201d she says. \u201cThat song is reassuring to me. It feels like it has this knowing that we\u2019ll be back together again. We can both be doing our own thing and be apart, and we\u2019re strong enough \u2014 we have that thread between us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
