Still don\u2019t get his drift? The song\u2019s title is Spanish for \u201cdemonic law.\u201d Cross this cat at your peril.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<em>Frozen Charlotte<\/em> is White\u2019s eighth solo album, fourth in as many years, and his most sustained maximalist-garage studio party in the eternity since the White Stripes\u2019 breakthrough rager, 2003\u2019s <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/elephant-2-117445\/\">Elephant<\/a>.<\/em> There was more room to catch your breath in the swagger and density of <em>Led Zeppelin II <\/em>than you get in White\u2019s serial rush out of that devilry in \u201cDerecho Demonico\u201d into the rockslide riffing and Hammond organ afire of \u201cThere\u2019s Nobody There\u201d; the hard rain of tribal drumming and shouted incantation of \u201cRaising the Grain\u201d; and the 1968-Motor City helter-skelter of \u201cYou\u2019ll Never Fix Me.\u201d In that last blast, White and his current killers on the road \u2014 bassist Dominic Davis (one of the leader\u2019s original Buzzards), drummer Patrick Keeler (the Greenhornes, the Raconteurs) and B-3 wrangler Bobby Emmett (formerly in Detroit ravers the Sights) \u2014 get down like they\u2019re on a Saturday-night bill at the Grande Ballroom with SRC and the MC5, with an extra touch of Emmett\u2019s closing, ghostly trail of mellotron.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThis record \u2014 named after White\u2019s sculpture on the cover, an image of broken innocence and looming menace in turn descended from a traditional folk song about a young girl\u2019s fatal vanity \u2014 is very much a rage for these times, 13 songs of perpetual disorder, challenged connections, and idealism under siege. White has no fear of the specific online, naming names and calling out brazen hypocrisies in his posts. But his force of argument here is at once more coded and universal, a manic blowback of slippery wordplay, in-jokes, and pocket-grenade axioms equal to the music\u2019s loud and twisted kicks. \u201cHey, I\u2019m confused and I bet it shows,\u201d White confesses in \u201cNobody Knows,\u201d throwing in a reference to the Denisovans (an Asian subspecies of Neanderthals \u2014 I had to look it up) and citing Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Pythagoras like a police lineup from a 1965 Bob Dylan song. There are plenty of man-woman trials amid the topical static \u2014 the \u201ckitchen cemetery of poses\u201d in \u201cThere\u2019s Nobody There\u201d; the pleading ruckus of \u201cThick as Thieves.\u201d And the closing, paranoid creep of \u201cNeighbor Blues\u201d \u2014 a slow-burn jam like <em>Elephant<\/em>\u2018s \u201cBall and Biscuit\u201d armored up for the surveillance age \u2014 ends with White calling in his own voodoo (\u201cOn your grave, three roosters standing guard\u201d).<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((1024\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThere\u2019s no immediate resolution in any of this. There\u2019s no surrender either \u2014 and a lot of great escape. White\u2019s slide guitar in \u201cDollar Bill\u201d sounds like a National Steel on steroids until the solo, when it turns into what seems like a theremin gone postal. \u201cI Can\u2019t Believe What I\u2019m Hearing\u201d has a great pop-wise chorus closer to the Pretty Things than Son House.
