This is part of that process,\u201d Perez told reporters before a community listening session at the Pope Francis Center on Felisa Street. \u201cWe want to hear what the opportunities are, dreams, hopes, and then we just work within the constraints of everything else after that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If that\u2019s the case, the table is certainly full<strong> <\/strong>of ideas.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n<aside id=\"bs_zones-4\" class=\"widget-odd widget-last widget-first widget-1 bs_zones clearfix\"\/><\/aside>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday evening, San Antonio residents shared ideas and desires for a sports and entertainment district at the first of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/spurs-public-listening-tour-future-downtown-san-antonio-sports-district\/\">10 planned listening sessions<\/a> throughout San Antonio. More than 40 attendees wrote down everything from public art and green space to free electric trolleys and pedestrian access to a performance center and Spurs-related activities on poster boards after the event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the start of a years-long process to build a $1.3 billion arena in San Antonio\u2019s urban core and bring the fresh-off-the NBA Finals Spurs team back downtown after more than 20 years on the city\u2019s East Side. After getting community feedback in a series of meetings, planning and construction can begin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arena is scheduled to host the Spurs beginning in 2030, Perez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City of San Antonio and Bexar County<strong> <\/strong>are set to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/decoding-spurs-arena-public-funding-pfz-tirz-venue-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contribute a combined $800 million<\/a> to the arena after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/election-results-props-a-and-b-spurs-arena-san-antonio-bexar-county\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voters supported spending<\/a> a combination of tax increment reinvestment zone funds and taxes targeting hotel visitors. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/city-council-spurs-arena-votes-project-marvel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spurs will kick in<\/a> another $500 million for the arena itself and contribute <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/spurs-economic-analysis-stone-csl-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another $1.4 billion<\/a> toward building the surrounding entertainment district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents wrote down everything from public art and green space to free electric trolleys and pedestrian access to a performance center and Spurs-related activities.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A map of the Spurs\u2019 proposed sports and entertainment district presented to community members on July 13, 2026 at the Pope Francis Center on Felisa Street. <span class=\"image-credit\"><span class=\"credit-label-wrapper\">Credit:<\/span> Jasper Kenzo Sundeen \/ San Antonio Report<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a lot of San Antonio attendees, the issue boiled down to culture and accessibility. It needs to be somewhere people from San Antonio feel comfortable,<strong> <\/strong>downtown resident Victor Mendoza said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n<aside id=\"bs_zones-5\" class=\"widget-odd widget-last widget-first widget-1 bs_zones clearfix\"\/><\/aside>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCulture has to really matter in it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are all Spurs fans here, but we also want to make sure we have a place where locals can have somewhere to have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cynthia Rocha, a 36-year-old San Antonio resident who works in the healthcare industry, added that family-friendly activities are a big part of that. San Antonio is steeped in traditions and festivals that have taken place for years, she said, and she doesn\u2019t want that to be interrupted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Culture] means family, for them to be able to have a lot of family activities,\u201d she said. \u201cThe majority of the time, it\u2019s just nice having a playground.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another attendee, Luis Tovar, added: \u201cFamily, food, party, that\u2019s pretty much what we\u2019re about. \u2026 We\u2019re hard workers, so we like to party hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendees called for a place that\u2019s<strong> <\/strong>open to all San Antonio residents. One card said the new district should be accessible when it comes to mobility and price with lower barriers to entry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another<strong> <\/strong>self-described Spurs fan, Kathy Vale, pointed to ticket prices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe national trend is when the new stadium is built, there are always less affordable seats and more private box seats, and I want San Antonio to be the city that breaks that trend,\u201d she said. \u201cI do not want to see less affordable seating in the new stadium and more luxury boxes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vale said a formal citizen advisory committee should be organized to provide regular input.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Spurs are a private corporation owned by millionaires and billionaires, and they have a business interest to do these type of events, and it\u2019s fine,\u201d Vale said. \u201cBut this event does not represent the city of San Antonio\u2019s interests \u2014 public land, public value for public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentiment was echoed by others in the room.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendoza, a downtown resident, said he was glad there was an opportunity to make his opinions heard. Perez said the community would have input on the other 18 to 20 acres<strong> <\/strong>of entertainment space, and suggested that housing, retail, dining and community gathering spaces could be among the uses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents who participated in the Monday night event urged others to attend the listening sessions planned in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can understand too how the community can have its reservations as far as coming to these meetings, but the activities really help for us to come out and speak on certain topics that they have,\u201d Rocha said. \u201cWe should encourage a lot more people to come to the other meetings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/spurs-public-listening-tour-future-downtown-san-antonio-sports-district\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">next listening session <\/a>will be Tuesday night at Alamo Community College\u2019s Dr. Bruce H. Leslie Boardroom at 2222 N.
