The Ed Sheeran Foundation will play a major role in the UK government’s new Music in Libraries programme, a major initiative aimed at opening dedicated music spaces in public libraries across England.<\/p>\n
The programme will be funded with at least \u00a312,5 million from the Dormant Asset Fund, and will provide children and young people with free access to quality music mentoring, recording equipment and music education outside the classroom.<\/p>\n
The idea for the national program came after Ed Sheeran met with the British Minister for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, at an arts organization last year. He was inspired by the Scottish project “Let’s Build Musical Instrument Libraries”, recognizing the potential of public libraries to become places accessible to anyone who wants to make music.<\/p>\n
Since then, his foundation has worked closely with the British Department of Culture, Media and Sport to develop this project.<\/p>\n
The funding will enable all libraries in England to apply for funding. Over the coming months, the Ed Sheeran Foundation and its partners will work to design the content of the new music spaces.<\/p>\n
Libraries included in the program will organize concerts, classes, workshops, and mentoring, and will be equipped with modern recording studios, mixing desks, and various musical instruments.<\/p>\n
The project represents a significant expansion of the work of the Ed Sheeran Foundation, which has focused most of its efforts on music education in state schools. Last year, Sheeran helped change the national music curriculum in England after more than a decade, after writing an open letter to the British Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
By expanding its activities to programs outside the school system, the foundation wants to reach as many young people as possible. According to its data, more than half of children aged 10 to 12 visited a public library in the past year, which is why it sees them as ideal places to provide equal opportunities for everyone interested in music.<\/p>\n
