\n\tIf you listen closely to Mike D<\/a>\u2018s upcoming solo album, Thank You<\/em>, you might hear familiar sounds. When composing music, the rapper\u2019s sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, who comprise part of the band Mike D 5D, used an E-mu SP-1200 sampler, whose vintage is from sometime in the Eighties, on loan from Mike D\u2019s Beastie Boys<\/a> bandmate, Adam \u201cAd-Rock\u201d Horovitz. The instrument came with floppy disks preloaded with Beastie beats.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a New York Times<\/a> <\/em>interview, producer Tyran Donaldson, who has also worked with SZA, recalled chuckling at listening to the Diamonds work with the instrument. \u201cIt\u2019s a time machine,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019d be trying to find a sound, and you\u2019d randomly hear a drum break that was on a Beastie Boys song.\u201d (Nobody in the article said whether or not the group used any of the actual Beasties breaks on the album.)<\/p>\n

\n\tThank You<\/em>, due Aug. 28, will be the first new music to come out of the Beasties camp since the 2012 death of Adam \u201cMCA\u201d Yauch. Mike D told the Times <\/em>that he spent years grieving and unable to make music. \u201cThe amount of grieving and sadness that I would feel, the easiest way to not feel that was to shut the computer down and walk away from it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was too much for me to process to stay focused and creative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe spent much of the decade-plus since Yauch\u2019s death producing for others and taking care of his family. It was Skyler and Davis, members of their own band Very Nice Person, who helped him to feel creative again. (When the Times <\/em>asked Ad-Rock why he hadn\u2019t released any of the music he\u2019d been working on daily for years, he replied quixotically, \u201cGood question.\u201d)<\/p>\n

\n\tThe music Mike D has released from Thank You <\/em>so far shows an experimental bent with leanings into psychedelia on \u201cWhat We Got,\u201d<\/a> \u201cSwitch Up,\u201d<\/a> and \u201cTrue Colors.\u201d<\/a> Mike D 5D will embark on a tour<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
