Louisiana death metal outfit BRAT have announced their sophomore album, Manslayer<\/em>, due out September 25 via Prosthetic Records.<\/p>\n Alongside the announcement, the band has released the album\u2019s lead single, \u201cManslayer (Hell Hath No Fury),\u201d accompanied by a new music video directed by John Colgan.<\/p>\n Produced, engineered, and mixed by Weekend Nachos\u2019 Andy Nelson at Bricktop Recording in Chicago, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Deadguy, Pig Destroyer), Manslayer<\/em> follows BRAT\u2019s 2024 debut, Social Grace<\/em>. The 17-track effort blends death metal, thrash, and hardcore while expanding the band\u2019s signature sound with darker themes.<\/p>\n Lyrically, vocalist Liz Selfish drew inspiration from an unexpected source: country music.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s not a lot of those tropes in death metal,\u201d Selfish said. \u201cI thought that was a really cool perspective and I really liked the storytelling aspect of it.\u201d<\/p>\n Songs like The Chicks\u2019 \u201cGoodbye Earl,\u201d Carrie Underwood\u2019s \u201cBefore He Cheats,\u201d and Miranda Lambert\u2019s \u201cGunpowder & Lead\u201d helped inspire the album\u2019s revenge-driven narrative, which flips traditional extreme metal storytelling by placing women in the role of avenger rather than victim.<\/p>\n Manslayer also marks the first time Selfish handled the album\u2019s lyrics in full, taking over lyric-writing duties while guitarist Brenner Moate focused on composing the music.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s quite new territory for me,\u201d Selfish explained. \u201cI wrote the first song for the album, and I just loved writing\u2026 I ended up writing the whole album. Brenner\u2019s main focus is writing music \u2013 he wants to write riffs \u2013 so it was a nice passing of the torch.\u201d<\/p>\n The album artwork was created by Wes Benscoter, whose past work includes releases by Slayer and Mortician.<\/p>\n Manslayer<\/em> track listing:<\/strong> According to the band, Manslayer<\/em> represents a darker evolution of BRAT\u2019s sound and aesthetic while retaining the tongue-in-cheek edge that helped define the group\u2019s early identity.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re evolving the bimboviolence and the campiness by making it all a little bit darker with this album, and a bit more overtly violent,\u201d Selfish said. \u201cI think that will probably reflect in our stage show and our imagery as well, keeping it fun\u2026 but definitely progressing into something darker.\u201d<\/p>\n Watch the video for \u201cManslayer (Hell Hath No Fury)\u201d below.
