She was like my big sister, really,\u201d Wariner said of Dottie West, whom he toured with when he was just 17. \u201c\u2026 She was such a songwriter. I like to brag because, hello, folks, she\u2019s the first female country artist to ever win a Grammy, and she wrote it, y\u2019all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, West won the Best Female Country Vocal Performance Grammy in 1965 for her song \u201cHere Comes My Baby.\u201d West wasn\u2019t the only talented person Wariner has hung around. He also spent time with Kris Kristofferson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI later got to know Kris pretty well, and he was so nice to me,\u201d Wariner said. \u201cI toured England with him one time later when I was having hits. We stood and watched Johnny Cash\u2026 We just stood there hanging out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Casually rubbing elbows with such big names is something Wariner said he misses about how Nashville used to be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNashville was a small town, and I loved it,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 I remember walking into George Jones\u2019 session down at Columbia\u2026 It was accessible, I guess what I\u2019m trying to say. You could meet anyone. You could walk up. You could pop in on a session or whatever. They really didn\u2019t mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-steve-wariner-discusses-his-art\">Steve Wariner Discusses His Art<\/h3>\n<p id=\"h-steve-wariner-discusses-his-art\">While music was long Wariner\u2019s focus, these days he\u2019s turned his attention to another artistic venture\u2014painting. It\u2019s something, Wariner revealed that he\u2019s been doing \u201calmost probably as long as music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the two art forms are different in many ways, Wariner sees many similarities between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were a smart man, I would try to write a book on the parallels of music and art,\u201d he said. \u201c\u2026 You\u2019re starting with nothing, and you\u2019re going to make something out of nothing. You\u2019ve got to have a vision.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you write a song, you\u2019re thinking about people are going to hear it, and then when you do a painting, you\u2019re thinking about people are going to see this,\u201d Wariner added. \u201cBut really in both cases, if you think about it, it\u2019s what they\u2019re going to feel more than see or hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a career first for him, Wariner is the artist behind a one-man showcase, which is being held at Monthaven Arts &amp; Cultural Center in Hendersonville, Tennessee, through July 26. Titled <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/monthavenarts.org\/exhibitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Flip Side<\/a><\/em>, the art show display another facet of Wariner\u2019s creative nature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, music is my passion, but the flip side of what I do, much like a flip side of a record, is my art and painting,\u201d he said. \u201cHere in this collection, you\u2019re going to see a lot of oils, oils on linen, cotton. You\u2019ll see a group of watercolors, probably 15 to 17 watercolors. Different styles of watercolors too.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some real large abstracts that I just can\u2019t stay on course with, like music. I love jazz. I love country. I love pop. I love gospel,\u201d Wariner added. \u201cSo it\u2019s kind of like my art\u2026 I\u2019m all over the place, but it\u2019s just being creative.
