I remember \u2018You Give Love A Bad Name\u2019 being in heavy rotation on MTV back then. I bought the album and wore the grooves off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, 40 year short years later, the rock fan turned wordsmith was given the opportunity to see the Rock Hall of Fame inductees from his childhood live for the first time at Madison Square Garden as part of the ensemble\u2019s ongoing \u2018Forever Tour\u2019 residency. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was so much better seeing them live,\u201d Kenton gushed. \u201cYou really get the beat and groove of the group in a way that you don\u2019t when listening to them on vinyl, radio or streaming services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019d like to catch the \u201980s legends live, they still have five concerts remaining at MSG. Kenton told us \u201cthe show started at 7:35, pretty much right on time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Kenton, they opened with The Beatles\u2019 \u201cWith a Little Help From My Friends.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe song was a big thank you from JBJ to his fans, and they loved it,\u201d he smiled. \u201cHe did it Joe Cocker style and from that moment forward it was a love fest in MSG.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was impressed by Bon Jovi\u2019s newer fare, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir more recent songs from \u20182020\u2019 (\u2018Beautiful Drug\u2019) and \u2018Forever\u2019 (\u2018Legendary\u2019) were genuine bangers. Tico Torres is truly the beating heart of the group. His driving\u00a0rhythms and catchy fills propelled the energy\u00a0in the hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRockers were mixed with ballads. The fans got all mushy and sentimental as he crooned\u00a0\u2018Bed of Roses.\u2019 JBJ also said he was taking us to church and sang \u2018Lay Your Hands on Me.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it wouldn\u2019t be a Bon Jovi show without the unimpeachable stadium anthem classics from the group\u2019s heyday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a look at some 21st century hits, JBJ counted back the years (\u201cwe\u2019re gonna party like its 1999! 1997! 1993! 1989! 1986!\u201d [there were a lot of Prince references in his patter]) and dove into \u2018You Give Love a Bad Name\u2019 his breakout MTV hit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To kick off the encore, the band rocked \u201cI\u2019ll Be There For You\u201d  \u201cRed, White and Jersey.\u201d Kenton told us JBJ said, \u201cI bet you all have a train to catch, but I just love playing for you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once they returned to the stage for the encore, they kicked things off with \u201cI\u2019ll Be There for You\u2019 and \u2018Red White and Jersey\u2019 before diving into the mega-hits\u00a0\u201cWanted Dead or Alive\u201d and\u00a0\u201cBad Medicine.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBon Jovi\u2019s fans were in fits of ecstasy during these barn burners,\u201d Kenton noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the unspoken love in the room was pride that NJ\u2019s native son had come back to singing after vocal cord surgery,\u201d he added. \u201cTbh, he did sound a bit strained \u2014 definitely not the voice of his 20s and 30s self.
