She intends to stay on there, having signed a contract through the 2028-29 season, in addition to her work in Madison.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is it\u2019s more common than not for conductors today to have more than one music directorship,\u201d said Jackson, who has a home base in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where her husband is a musicologist. \u201cThe Madison Symphony and the Reno Philharmonic work beautifully in complement to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As one of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/where-the-madison-symphony-orchestra-stands-on-its-director-search\/article_f41c7360-0fde-41bc-b2ad-08ec2ce5d984.html\">eight finalists<\/a>, Jackson conducted the MSO in April on a program featuring the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. She will return to conduct this coming season as music director designate in November for a program of Carlos Simon, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and again in May 2027.<\/p>\n<p>According to a news release, she will assume the title of MSO music director full-time in 2027-28, starting with a five-year contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I love the most about the work that I do as a conductor is investing in communities,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cMadison is going to find that I am 110% invested in that part of the job. Laura Jackson will start with the MSO as music director designate this season and take over full-time in 2027.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                                <\/span><\/p>\n<p>                                <span class=\"credit\"><br \/>\n                                    <span itemprop=\"author\" class=\"tnt-byline\">PETER RODGERS<\/span><br \/>\n                                <\/span><\/p>\n<p>                        <span class=\"clearfix\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Symphony succession plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In June,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/entertainment\/music\/how-a-madison-maestro-composed-his-life-career-in-american-music\/article_fb1dbf5b-9cda-4e52-b5a6-044430f84f89.html\">John DeMain retired<\/a> as artistic director of the Madison Symphony Orchestra after 32 years. He will continue to lead the MSO on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Reed, executive director of the MSO, will work closely with Jackson to run the organization, which has a budget of about $6 million and runs eight subscription concert weekends a year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited about what a new person is going to bring,\u201d Reed said. \u201cShe can take the orchestra to yet another new level \u2014 we\u2019re excited about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to her biography, Jackson studied violin and conducting at Indiana University, earned a DMA and master\u2019s in orchestral conducting at the University of Michigan, and from 2004-2007 she \u201cserved as the first female assistant conductor\/ League of American Orchestras Conducting Fellow of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Reno Philharmonic consists of about 60 professional part-time musicians. Jackson\u2019s bio notes that under her leadership, the Reno Phil \u201cexpanded its community and education programs\u201d with live-streamed concerts, four youth orchestras and popular movies accompanied by a live orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>(The MSO has been doing this, too; the upcoming season includes a live orchestra with \u201cThe Lion King\u201d on Sept. 20 and \u201cStar Wars: The Empire Strikes Back\u201d in May 2027).<\/p>\n<p>Jackson led an event called \u201cPlay and Sing for a Day,\u201d her bio says, \u201cin which amateur community musicians perform side-by-side in concert with Reno Phil professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Parity on the podium<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Reed noted that for a woman to lead an orchestra at the highest level is still rare. According to a League of American Orchestras\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/americanorchestras.org\/diversity-in-the-orchestra-field-2023-key-findings-by-orchestra-role\/\">report in 2023<\/a>, only one in nine music directors is a woman. A study by the Donne Foundation in 2024 showed that 10.1% of orchestras worldwide were led by women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality of my daily life is I wake up in the morning and I study my scores and I go and I conduct and I try to be the best artist that I can,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cI am fortunate that there were predecessors who came before me that did the hardest level of work. \u2026 I also take it very seriously that part of my role is to make it easier for the next group of women that come up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said she\u2019s glad not to have been the first woman on the podium in front of the Madison Symphony Orchestra (a first she\u2019s experienced many times in her career). She also knows change for an organization that has had the same leadership for decades can be \u201cscary,\u201d and she takes the responsibility \u201cvery, very seriously.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really happy to answer questions when people have them,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cI understand that for a lot of audience members, they haven\u2019t seen very many women on the podium. That\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Madison Symphony\u2019s season starts with a one-off opening night on Sept. 18 led by maestro DeMain. It will feature Joshua Bell playing \u00c9douard Lalo\u2019s \u201cSymphonie espagnole\u201d and Jules Massenet\u2019s \u201cM\u00e9ditation\u201d from \u201cTha\u00efs\u201d on a program that also includes \u201cThe Sorcerer\u2019s Apprentice\u201d and \u201cBol\u00e9ro.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am going to do everything I possibly can to make this a really positive and exciting next chapter,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cTo win a position as a music director, that\u2019s just incredibly hard to do.
