Nancy Guthrie<\/a>, Savannah Guthrie\u2019s mom<\/a>, disappeared a little under six months ago. Ever since, people have scrutinized the movements of her daughter, including where she is on the Today show and when she\u2019s absent. This has become especially sensitive considering reports that Savannah<\/a> would be pulled from the show if there\u2019s any break in the case.<\/p>\n So, when Guthrie was absent for four days last week, people paid attention. Where was she? Has she learned something about her mother\u2019s case? The answer seems to be no. Apparently, she watched a lot of FIFA World Cup 2026 matches. \u201cI watched quite a few of them,\u201d she explained, before telling Melvin. \u201cAnd you should know, the France and Spain semifinal is today.\u201d<\/p>\n Spain beat France in that semifinal, and they will face Argentina, who beat England, on Sunday for the final.<\/p>\n Basically, it had nothing to do with her mother\u2019s case.<\/p>\n If people wondered if it might be, it\u2019s because, when Nancy Guthrie disappeared<\/a>, her daughter took an extended leave of absence before returning in April. She has also shared multiple messages on social media and pleaded with the public for any information.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are in agony,\u201d she said at one point. \u201cAnd we cannot be at peace. No matter how much I try to come out here every day and smile and find that joy, I will. I promise I will. This is the moment to tell you that we need your help. We\u2019re begging for your help\u2026We love our mom and we\u2019ll never stop looking for her, ever.\u201d<\/p>\n She also spoke of what returning to the Today show meant to her in one recent episode. \u201cI love you guys and I love this place,\u201d she said during the June 23 episode of\u00a0Today<\/em>. \u201cThis is unusual and unprecedented, to say the least, to be sitting here. But I don\u2019t have any comment on this story and I\u2019m not involved in our coverage\u2014but I can\u2019t pretend I\u2019m not here. And so, since I am, I wanted to take the opportunity to ask people to, to beg people to come forward, somebody knows something.\u201d<\/p>\n The latest on the case saw a California man, identified as Derrick Callella, plead guilty to writing a fake ransom note to the Guthrie family. Arizona\u2019s\u00a0KOLD 13 News<\/a>\u00a0reported that Callella was charged with \u201ctransmitting a demand for ransom in interstate commerce and utilizing a telecommunications device with intent to abuse, threaten, or harass a person.\u201d<\/p>\n Callella pled guilty on July 2, and his sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 10, 2026.
