Subscribe free below.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Haskell Free Library and Opera House will host a varied slate of August programming for children, families and adults, including weekly crafts, a family music event, a children\u2019s coding project, a short-film festival and appearances by two authors.<\/p>\n The activities will take place at the cross-border institution, located at 1 Church Street in Stanstead and 93 Caswell Avenue in Derby Line, Vermont.<\/p>\n Several events are connected to the Haskell\u2019s summer reading program, which will conclude in mid-August with children\u2019s films, refreshments and book prizes.<\/p>\n Children will be able to take part in craft sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 to 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n A different project is planned for each week of the month. Participants will make jellyfish during the first week, turtles during the second, pencils during the third and school buses during the fourth.<\/p>\n The library\u2019s summer reading challenge will also continue during the first half of August. Participants can visit the library to receive stickers for their summer reading booklets, with each sticker earning a prize.<\/p>\n Children who complete their booklets can return on or after Aug. 15 to receive a new book. Registration is available at the library\u2019s front desk.<\/p>\n The month\u2019s activities begin Saturday, Aug. 1, with programs for children and adults.<\/p>\n A Saturday singing session for children is scheduled from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The library describes the sessions as an opportunity for young participants to learn how to sing in the Opera House.<\/p>\n A bilingual Crafty Adults activity will be held during the same period, from 1 to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n Participants in the adult program will create decorative roses using sheets of printed music.<\/p>\n Families will have two activities to choose from Saturday, Aug. 8.<\/p>\n Shawny will lead a free family music event from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The program will feature music and movement, with children and their families invited to sing, dance and move along.<\/p>\n An ocean animation coding project will follow from 1 to 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n The coding activity is intended for children aged eight and older. Participants will work on programming an ocean-themed sunrise animation.<\/p>\n The library\u2019s summer colouring contest will end Wednesday, Aug. 12.<\/p>\n Children can pick up a colouring sheet at the front desk, complete it and return their finished work for a chance to win a prize.<\/p>\n The final meeting of the Summer Comic Book Club will take place Friday, Aug. 14, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n The seven-week program encourages participants to work together and use their creativity while developing a sequel to the previous summer\u2019s comic, titled \u201cThe Adventures of Magic.\u201d<\/p>\n The summer reading program will conclude Saturday, Aug. 15, with a short-film festival and book giveaway in the children\u2019s room.<\/p>\n The Haskell is partnering with the National Film Board of Canada to present a selection of short films for children.<\/p>\n English-language films are scheduled from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. French-language films will be shown from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n The library\u2019s promotional material says popcorn, beverages and book prizes will be available during the closing activities.<\/p>\n Children\u2019s author Stephanie Thomas will visit the Haskell for a sensory storytime Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n Thomas will read her book, \u201cThe Unicorn Who Hated the Shower: A Quest for the Gentle Mist.\u201d<\/p>\n According to the event announcement, the story is intended to resonate with children who may feel overwhelmed by bath or shower time, loud sounds, unfamiliar textures or strong emotions.<\/p>\n The sensory storytime will be held at the library. The promotional flyer does not indicate whether advance registration is required.<\/p>\n Author Brenda Hartwell will appear at the Haskell on Friday, Aug. 28, for an event centred on her novel, \u201cNo Wrong Seasons.\u201d<\/p>\n The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n Hartwell is expected to read selected excerpts from the book before participating in a question-and-answer session and signing copies.<\/p>\n The library says the event will offer attendees an opportunity to speak with the author and learn more about her creative process and the inspiration behind the novel.<\/p>\n Light refreshments are also expected to be provided.<\/p>\n The Haskell Free Library and Opera House can be reached at 1-888-626-2060.
