The co-creator of Back to the Future<\/em> franchise has revealed the fascinating behind-the-scenes story of Marty McFly’s iconic vest.<\/p>\n Back to the Future<\/em> fans know all about the classic vest donned by Michael J. Fox’s character. The vest was a classic look for ’80s fashion, but Marty looked completely out of place when he was accidentally sent back in time to 1955.<\/p>\n Minutes after Marty arrives in 1955, a cafe owner mistakes the vest for a life preserver, asking if he jumped ship. Biff Tannen’s friend, Skinhead, also remarks, “Dork thinks he’s gonna drown.”<\/p>\n During an interview with SYFY Wire<\/a>, Back to the Future<\/em> co-creator Bob Gale said that Marty was initially going to wear regular clothing “and not stick out like a sore thumb.” However, Gale liked the idea of the “life preserver” look after spotting someone on the street in an orange vest.<\/p>\n “And I thought to myself, \u2018If that guy was in the ’50s, they’d think it was a life preserver.\u2019 Boom! That’s when the light bulb went off in my head,” Gale said. “Of course! We\u2019ve gotta have Marty wearing an orange down vest and everybody’s gonna ask him about his life preserver. I don’t remember exactly where I was, I just remember seeing this and thinking here’s a really good joke.”<\/p>\n From the life preserver, the short-sleeve button-ups and the zoot suit for the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance, McFly sure displayed a remarkable sense of fashion during his brief stay in 1955.<\/p>\n Fox was the original choice to play Marty McFly, but he was busy filming the Family Ties<\/em> hit series.
