\n\tIt\u2019s not just a sweet, sweet fantasy: Mariah Carey<\/a> has released an expanded edition of Daydream<\/a><\/em> to celebrate the seminal album\u2019s 30th anniversary. Officially titled Daydream: 30th\u00a0Anniversary Edition<\/em>, the new version includes unreleased bonus tracks, rare demos, live performances, and remixes. The digital version is out now via Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis album marked an era of firsts for me: my first rap collaboration on the iconic \u2018Fantasy\u2019 remix with O.D.B., my first time working with JD, my first world tour, my first time directing a music video on my own, and so many more,\u201d Carey wrote<\/a> in a post on social media. \u201cIt\u2019s only fitting to include some \u2018firsts\u2019 on this anniversary edition too! Most notably, this is the first time I\u2019ve ever agreed (or rather, been convinced) to release my private writing sessions for \u2018I Am Free\u2019 (with Walter A.) and \u2018Melt Away\u2019 (with Babyface). I hope you enjoy this lil\u2019 glimpse into the making of these songs, along with remixes, live performances, acapellas, and b-sides.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDaydream<\/em> was released on Oct. 3 1995 as Carey\u2019s fifth studio album, and marked a definitive shift in her sound as the superstar expertly blended R&B, hip-hop, and pop sounds together, creating a fresh landscape that set the foundation for her classic LP Butterfly<\/em>. It debuted at Number One on the Billboard<\/em> 200 and created multiple hits like \u201cFantasy,\u201d \u201cAlways Be My Baby,\u201d and \u201cOne Sweet Day,\u201d Carey\u2019s collaboration with Boyz II Men. Since then, the album has been certified 11-times multi-platinum.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn her 2020 memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey<\/em>, the singer revealed<\/a> that during sessions for Daydream<\/em>, she made an entirely different, totally unexpected project that has yet to be released: her alternative rock album. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were popular at the time,\u201d she wrote at the time. \u201cThey could be angry, angsty, and messy, with old shoes, wrinkled slips, and unruly eyebrows, while every movie I made was so calculated and manicured.\u201d Carey continued: \u201cI wanted to break free, let loose, and express my misery \u2014 but I also wanted to laugh. I totally looked forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after\u00a0Daydream<\/em>\u00a0each night.\u201d Maybe we\u2019ll get finally get to hear that album for Daydream\u2019s<\/em> next anniversary.<\/p>\n
