The San Diego Padres<\/a> took another strong step toward becoming sellers at the deadline as they submitted another listless, poorly-pitched game against the Kansas City Royals<\/a> that wound up being a 6-1 loss.<\/p>\n There wasn\u2019t a lot to like in this one. Griffin Canning<\/a> was the San Diego<\/a> starter, and he was immediately victimized by Lane Thomas<\/a>, who hit a two-run homer in the first inning as he continues to\u00a0 menace the Padres in the series. Fernando Tatis Jr.<\/a> got one run back in the third with a rare home run of his own, but the Royals quickly regained the lead off Canning, who had another rough go.<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n The run in the third came via an RBI double by Jac Caglianone<\/a> double, and an RBI single by Isaac Collins<\/a> in the fourth gave the Royals a 4-1 lead.<\/p>\n That was it for Canning, who gave up all four runs as part as an ugly overall line that inlcuded five hits and a pair of walks in 3-2\/3 innings. Canning\u2019s ERA is now 6.67, and it\u2019s hard to imagine that the Padres will keep running him out to the mound for much longer.<\/p>\n Matt Waldron<\/a> took over, and it didn\u2019t take long for the Royals to extend their lead. Savador Perez did the honors with a two-run blast in the sixth to make it 6-1, and it was the 315th home run of his career as he drew to within two of George Brett, who is the Royals all-time home run leader at 317.<\/p>\n The Padres didn\u2019t have much to offer after that as they were shut down by a series of Royals relievers with Daniel Lynch IV<\/a> getting his third win of the season. It wasn\u2019t hard to pinpoint the problem in this one, as Jackson Merrill<\/a>, Xander Bogaerts<\/a>, Manny Machado<\/a> and Gavin Sheets<\/a> combined to go 0-for-17, as the bottom of the lineup produced five singles to go with the Tatis homer.<\/p>\n Advertisement<\/p>\n The loss left the Padres 14 games out of first in the NL West, and they\u2019re 3-1\/2 games out of the wild card race.
