Buckingham Palace has revealed that one of the most ancient
\nroyal traditions has taken place as King Charles carried out a
\nhugely imporotant duty.<\/p>\n
On July 20 2026, The King received Andy Burnham at Buckingham
\nPalace and asked him to form a government.<\/p>\n
And the Palace has revealed that \u201dAndrew Burnham MP accepted The
\nKing\u2019s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2018Kissing hands\u201d always takes place when the Monarch appoints a
\nnew PM. It used to mean just that \u2013 the incoming premier would kiss
\nthe hand of the Monarch.<\/p>\n
Now, it\u2019s believed that a handshake suffices although no one
\nreally knows other than The King and the PM.<\/p>\n
While photographers capture the moment they meet for the
\naudience, the event itself takes place in private.<\/p>\n
It may still be that Andy Burnham, inside the cool enclaves of
\nBuckingham Palace, did in fact bow and kiss the hand of The King
\nafter being asked t form a goverment.<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s event is one of the most important things that King
\nCharles can do. The Monarch must appoint a PM otherwise there is no
\ngovernment. And while, technically, they are free to choose who to
\npick, they always follow the will of the people. The Monarch asks
\nthe leader of the parliamentary grouping most likely to be able to
\nform a government to do just that.<\/p>\n
In Andy Burnham\u2019s case, he finds himself at Buckingham Palace
\nahead of a move to Number 10 Downing Street after being elected
\nleader of the Labour Party in an unopposed competition. Labour has
\na huge majority in the House of Commons and so, as their new
\nleader, he is the person most likely to be able to form a
\ngovernment.<\/p>\n
King Charles received Andy Burnham after receiving outgoing PM,
\nSir Keir Starmer, who tendered his resignation. His car swept out
\nof the courtyard of Buckingham Palace and was quickly followed in
\nby Andy Burnham\u2019s vehicle. The change of power took just minutes
\nbut without King Charles, it couldn\u2019t happen at all.<\/p>\n
The King travelled to London from Highgrove House, the residence
\nin Gloucestershire that he has called home for almost fifty years.
\nIt now belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall and so, technically,
\nCharles III leases it from Prince William.<\/p>\n
Whether kissing hands took place or not, there was another
\nchange to tradition brought in by Charles III. Elizabeth II was
\nalways photographed with her new PM bowing or curtseying to her.
\nThe King is now seen shaking their hand instead.<\/p>\n
