Timothy Olyphant says he playfully trolls David Fincher on the set of their Once Upon a Time in Hollywood <\/em>sequel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Olyphant noted Fincher\u2019s tendency to ask for multiple takes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Despite Olyphant appearing in the sequel to Quentin Tarantino\u2019s 2019 film only \u201cvery briefly,\u201d he said there were times he was \u201cpushing 20\u201d takes on a single scene.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Long days on film sets can get so dreary. Some playful ribbing.<\/p>\n The Deadwood <\/em>and Justified <\/em>star is set to reprise his role as the real-life actor James Stacy in The Adventures of Cliff Booth<\/em><\/a>, a sequel to Quentin Tarantino<\/a>\u2019s 2019 hit, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood<\/em>. Adventures <\/em>will switch its focus from Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s f\u00eated screen star Rick Dalton to Brad Pitt\u2019s overlooked stunt man Cliff Booth, with Pitt reprising his role alongside Olyphant.<\/p>\n DiCaprio, however, is out, and so is Tarantino, who\u2019s handed of the reins to David Fincher<\/a>, the Oscar-nominated auteur behind films like The Social Network <\/em>and Gone Girl<\/em>. Fresh off the experience, Olyphant stopped by the Smartless <\/em><\/a>podcast<\/a> on Monday, where he regaled hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett with the playful way he teased the notoriously scrupulous Fincher during long shoots.<\/p>\n Brad Pitt in \u2018Once Upon a Time in Hollywood\u2019Credit: Andrew Cooper\/Sony<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Bateman asked if Fincher gave Olyphant a good deal of \u201cperformance notes\u201d during production. Olyphant just laughed, recalling, \u201cMy favorite thing to do was this: After we\u2019d finished a take, before he said anything, I\u2019d say, \u2018Can I get one more? If I could just get one more.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Olyphant explained, \u201cHe\u2019s famous for many takes.\u201d Though Olyphant said he only appears \u201cvery briefly\u201d in the sequel, one scene he did shoot took \u201ctwo days, day and a half. I\u2019d never done anything like it. I felt like I was pledging a fraternity. Felt a little bit like, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s go again. Let\u2019s do it! F— yeah! I want to be part of this, let\u2019s go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The Smartless <\/em>crew were full of questions for Olyphant.<\/p>\n \u201cWas it mostly technical and framing?\u201d Arnett asked.<\/p>\n \u201cA composition thing?\u201d Bateman added.<\/p>\n Olyphant considered. \u201cHonestly, it\u2019s oftentimes, multiple \u2014 it\u2019s everything.\u201d The 58-year-old actor mimicked Fincher microdirecting him: \u201cIt\u2019s, \u2018Okay on that moment, maybe this. Then when you lift your hand up, show me where it is. Okay, now move it just an inch left. Okay, now down just a half an inch. In a 2023 conversation<\/a> with his Zodiac <\/em>costar Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. recalled, \u201cMark is doing a scene in a phone booth \u2014 about take 218.\u201d<\/p>\n Ruffalo laughed, calling the film \u201ca wild ride,\u201d but Downey Jr. explained that after working with Christopher Nolan on Oppenheimer<\/em>, \u201cI called Fincher recently, because in retrospect, everything changes. Fifteen years later, you have such a different perspective on stuff… I developed a new respect for Fincher. But I remember, that might have been the first time we really had our feet put to the fire with an exacting director. A real director, who does things a certain way.\u201d<\/p>\n
