It sits between grief and liberation, when someone finally lets go of the version of themselves that has spent too long holding everything together.

At its heart, Hull said, it explores the complicated emotions of being a woman: the expectations to be accommodating, forgiving and composed, even when carrying hurt, disappointment and rage.

“For a long time, I had suppressed my anger, seeing it as something uncomfortable or even shameful. But ‘What You Made Me Do’ gave me permission to access that feeling and understand its value. Beneath the anger was truth and a refusal to be diminished. For that, I am deeply grateful,” she explained.

Hull wrote and produced “What You Made Me Do” with Pip Norman, who has also worked with the likes of Baker Boy, Missy Higgins, and Mia Wray. They recorded it in Castlemaine with engineer Jono Steer (Angie McMahon, Gretta Ray, Ainslie Wills) at Sound Recordings, with mixing by Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, PJ Harvey).

The song is accompanied with a music video directed by Keiran Watson-Bonnice, who Hull has previously collaborated with.

“Working on the music video for ‘What You Made Me Do’ with Keiran Watson-Bonnice was so much fun. The video is a metaphor for disappointment and invisibility – offering something meaningful and it not being met. Destroying the cake and moving into chaos is the breaking point of the song. For me, that moment isn’t just destruction – it was a release.”

Hull will return to the stage next month with headline shows in Castlemaine and Melbourne, where she will perform new material with her full band.
