Martin Short, Eugene Levy, and more look back at their 1972 production of Godspell<\/em> in a new documentary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n The trailer for You Had to Be There<\/em> features Short recalling his reaction to watching Gilda Radner\u2019s audition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n Short went on to date Radner, who died in 1989.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Martin Short<\/a> remembers exactly what Gilda Radner<\/a>\u2019s audition for their 1972 stage production of Godspell<\/em> in Toronto was like, and, though the two would go on to date, she didn\u2019t come off especially well.<\/p>\n As she wore pigtails and sang \u201cZip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah,\u201d Short found himself thinking, \u201cThat is the most tragic thing I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d the Only Murders in the Building<\/em><\/a> star recounts in the new trailer for an upcoming documentary about the stage show.<\/p>\n Former Godspell<\/em> cast members Short, Eugene Levy<\/a>, Victor Garber<\/a>, and others look back on the production, which was famously filled with future stars, in You Had to Be There<\/em>. Executive produced by Judd Apatow<\/a>, the project also stars celebrities such as Mike Myers<\/a> and Lin-Manuel Miranda<\/a>.<\/p>\n While the context of the comment is unclear, Short couldn\u2019t have known during Radner\u2019s audition that she would go on to perform characters, including young girls on Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a>, where both of them would spend time in the years to come. She was one of the show\u2019s original cast members and stayed until season 5, while Short joined the sketch series for a year in 1984.<\/p>\n Short was also unaware that they would go on to date after meeting on the production. He was 22, while she was 26. Smith. They divorced in 1982, but two years later, she married Young Frankenstein<\/em> actor Gene Wilder<\/a>, whom she was with until she died of ovarian cancer in 1989.<\/p>\n Short remembers Radner fondly<\/a>.<\/p>\n In March 2025, he told another SNL<\/em> alum, Amy Poehler on her Good Hang<\/em><\/a> podcast, that his ex was the coolest.<\/p>\n The \u2018Godspell\u2019 castCredit: Greenwich Entertainment<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cI\u2019ve said this before,\u201d Short noted, \u201cbut every girl wanted to be her best friend, And every guy wanted to go out with her.\u201d<\/p>\n He explained that Radner had been \u201cthe happiest person in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
