A Tony-winning Best Musical that continues as a long-running Broadway hit, \u201cHadestown\u201d transforms a pair of ancient Greek tragedies into a dazzling mix of American folk and New Orleans-inspired jazz to tell the timeless saga of the lovers Orpheus and Eurydice as they dive into the underworld.<\/p>\n
Beginning Friday for five days, \u201cHadestown: The Musical\u201d is in movie theaters in an imaginative, live theater capture. It reunites the original stars from the London and Broadway runs: Reeve Carney (Orpheus), Eva Noblezada (Eurydice), Andre De Shields, who won the Tony, as Hermes, Patrick Page (Hades) and Amber Gray (Persephone).<\/p>\n
For Carney, who starred as\u00a0Spider-Man\u00a0for three years on Broadway, \u201cHadestown\u201d works because,\u00a0\u201cdeep down, people understand,\u201d he said in a Zoom interview, \u201cthat it is worth having faith and hoping for a better future.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the story is optimistic, obviously it\u2019s still a Greek tragedy. But I don\u2019t really see it that way. I like the optimism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney, 43, has reason to be upbeat. He and Noblezada, 28, met on \u201cHadestown,\u201d fell in love and married last year. They have since co-starred in London\u2019s revival of \u201cCabaret\u201d and just ended their Broadway run in another long-running hit, \u201cGatsby.\u201d<\/p>\n
Many might fantasize about being on Broadway but the discipline \u2014 eight shows a week \u2014 is unforgiving.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a grind like no other,\u201d Carney acknowledged. \u201cBut it\u2019s something that I love. I love the challenge. I mean, there are days you go \u2018Ooh, can I do this today?\u2019 You can either decide to back out or go, \u2018Let\u2019s see what I\u2019m capable of!\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, that\u2019s the approach I tend to take. It\u2019s exciting, even if it is your whole life revolving around it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spent so many years on the road in rock and roll bands before I got to Broadway that I always tell people: Learn what works for your body.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney discovered, thanks to his voice coach, his dazzling, lyrical high notes.<\/p>\n
\u201cHonestly, I just can\u2019t say enough about vocal training for people. Because you need it. My vocal teacher the past 20 years prepped me before I even knew I would be on Broadway, building stamina.\u201d<\/p>\n
Is\u00a0he a tenor?<\/p>\n
\u201cI would say I\u2019m a bari-tenor. Like a tenor. My teacher, she doesn\u2019t want to limit her students. So she never really said what voice part I am. But I\u2019d guess, she\u2019d say I probably am a tenor 2, which is technically a lower tenor, but with access to make it falsetto.<\/p>\n
\u201cA lot of what I use in \u2018Hadestown\u2019 is mixed and connected to a head voice. But some falsetto is in there too.\u201d<\/p>\n
