The Crocker Art Museum has a novel way to kickstart this kind of creativity with the second edition of\u00a0Playhouse and Playdough<\/a> on Saturday. Along with Wearable Worlds<\/a>, which debuts in August, these are the newest offerings in the Crocker\u2019s Kids + Family programs.<\/p>\nPlayhouse and Playdough participants will watch \u201cPeter and the Wolf,\u201d a time-honored bit of classical music education, then bring visions of the movie to life with air dry clay. With the surreal claymation approach from this 1973 German version of the film, you know the final products from the kids will be keepers.<\/p>\n
While at the Crocker, it\u2019s an opportune time to check out\u00a0\u201cGleefully Askew: A Gladys Nilsson Retrospective.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0This latest exhibition opened July 19 and it\u2019s one where you\u2019ll see watercolor in entirely new ways. The elongated figures in the artist\u2019s work will make the Crocker\u2019s walls come to life in fun and funky ways.<\/p>\nAfterward, cool off by taking advantage of the local uptick in snow cone and shave ice spots.\u00a0Osaka-Ya<\/a>, which is just about a mile away, is a classic summertime destination for snow cones.\u00a0Ululani\u2019s Hawaiian Shave Ice<\/a>\u00a0in Old Sacramento and\u00a0H\u0101nai Shave Ice & Island Grindz<\/a>\u00a0on the R St. Corridor also have you covered nearby with frozen treats.<\/p>\nMusical cures for summertime blues<\/h2>\n

The latest installment happens July 24 (Friday) with hip-hop from Jakhari Smith<\/a> followed by a Q&A led by Natachi Mez, an Abridged community reporter. Highly recommended for the acoustics and intimacy of the space.<\/p>\nFor fans of progressive heavy metal, a Queensr\u00ffche show is a must (and so is the diaeresis \u00ff in the band\u2019s name). The current lineup is much different than its \u201cOperation: Mindcrime\u201d heyday of the 1980s. Still, their July 24 show at Hard Rock Live<\/a> in Wheatland will still rock in a \u201cJet City Woman\u201d kind of way.\u00a0<\/p>\nNext year marks the 50th anniversary of Elvis Presley\u2019s passing. But you can still get a taste of The King with the \u201cElvis Live!\u201d<\/a> tribute on July 24 at the Harris Center in Folsom. See this 1960 classic at The Dreamland Cinema<\/a> in Midtown from July 24 (Friday) through July 26 (Sunday).<\/p>\nCatch the David Lynch retrospective at the Tower Theater in Sacramento, including three showings daily of \u201cMulholland Drive\u201d<\/a> from July 24-26.<\/p>\nPractice your \u201cTequila\u201d dance and catch \u201cPee Wee\u2019s Big Adventure\u201d<\/a> at Downtown Sacramento\u2019s Crest Theatre on July 23 (Thursday). Note that weekday movies at The Crest are a mere $2.<\/p>\nMarvel at expert paddlers without getting wet. On July 24, the Auburn State Theatre presents selections from the 2026 World Tour Paddling Film Festival<\/a>.
