Garc\u00eda for a book talk and signing of\u00a0\u201cRupert Garc\u00eda: The Making of an American Artist \u2014 A Testimonio,\u201d 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 3321 State St., Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The athor\u00a0is a distinguished professor of Chicano studies and history at UC Santa Barbara.<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garc\u00eda\u2019s book is the first biography of the renowned American Chicano visual artist and activist Rupert\u00a0Garc\u00eda, drawing on 50 hours of interviews conducted over three decades, and accompanied by 80 images.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The in-depth oral history examines Garc\u00eda\u2019s life and work, tracing his evolution as an artist and the political upheavals that shaped his life and worldview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mario Garc\u00eda\u2019s\u00a0testimonio\u00a0places Rupert Garc\u00eda\u2019s art in historical perspective, from his beginnings as a working-class Mexican American from California\u2019s Central Valley; coming of age in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam war; involvement in the antiwar movement during the San Francisco State student strike in 1968-69; to his participation in the Chicano Movement and beyond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Influenced by history and politics, Garc\u00eda\u2019s works of art represent a changing world through the eyes of an artist, speaking to issues of poverty, racism, capitalism, war, and the role of the artist in society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHis art \u2014 from revolutionary silkscreen posters to monumental pastels to portraits of political icons like Frida Kahlo, Che Guevara, and Dolores Huerta \u2014 serves to critique history and reassess it.
