Amy Winehouse<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s mother, Janis Winehouse<\/strong>, looked back on her late daughter\u2019s life on the 15th anniversary of her tragic death.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was a victim of her own success,\u201d Janis, 72, told The i Paper<\/a> in a rare interview published on Thursday, July 23. \u201cShe didn\u2019t want it, but it just followed her. And she\u2019d be like, \u2018Who, me?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Amy died<\/a> in July 2011 at age 27. Her official cause of death was ruled accidental alcohol poisoning. Before her passing, Amy openly struggled with substance abuse. Looking back on it now, Janis thinks her daughter used alcohol as a crutch.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was actually nervous,\u201d she said of the Grammy winner. \u201cShe didn\u2019t have confidence. Hence the alcohol. I think it\u2019s the same with many, many addicts with alcohol. The alcohol takes away the pain. And that is a horrible thing with addiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tAmy Winehouse\u2019s ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, is opening up about her tragic death nearly 15 years later. \u201cAs I\u2019ve always said, I\u2019ve never shirked from any responsibility. If I\u2019ve done something, I\u2019ll put my hand up to it,\u201d Fielder, 43, said on the Tuesday, March 17, episode of the \u201cWe Need to Talk\u201d podcast. \u201cI\u2019m OK [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Janis added that many people to this day do not understand how addiction takes a toll on a person.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce you\u2019re addicted, you\u2019re addicted,\u201d she reflected. \u201cThe only boss is the addiction. People say, \u2018Oh, no, you just stop doing such and such\u2019.\u201d They don\u2019t get it. You can\u2019t stop because your body is saying I need it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Janis has been without her daughter for nearly two decades, she still struggles with grief.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just getting on with it because that\u2019s what I do. I get on with life. I live it,\u201d she said. \u201cShe was so like me, she just got on with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

One way Janis has channeled her grief was to co-found the Amy Winehouse Foundation alongside other members of Amy\u2019s family. The nonprofit helps children and young adults build their self-esteem. The foundation also runs a recovery house for women, aptly named Amy\u2019s Place, in London.<\/p>\n

Amy\u2019s stepmother, Jane Winehouse<\/strong>, shared that the inspiration to create the nonprofit was to help spread joy amid their dark time.<\/p>\n
