This weekend the Arts District gets festive with White Linen Night, an evening of gallery and museum shows, art activations and live music in the streets and more. White Linen is at 5-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, and there\u2019s an afterparty at the Contemporary Arts Center.<\/p>\n White Linen is anchored by the contemporary art galleries along Julia Street and nearby blocks of Magazine and Tchoupitoulas, as well as the outlying Stella Jones Gallery on St. Charles Avenue in the CBD. There also are shows at venues including hotels and other spaces. The mix of shows ranges from gallery artists and group shows to more experimental and fun shows curated for the crowds at the summer event.<\/p>\n One festive show is \u201cAltered States\u201d at Arthur Roger Gallery, featuring art and installations by creatives who build things for Burning Man, the annual festival in the Nevada desert. There\u2019s work by Josh Pitts, co-founder of Interrobang, and Brennan Steele, founder of the Space Vikings. Steele also has work at a special expo at the offices of Deutsch Kerrigan at 755 Magazine St. There\u2019s also work by muralist JoLean Barkley, large-scale art installation fabricator William Nemitoff and more.<\/p>\n Julia Street will be bookended by two music stages. The main stage on the 300 block of Julia will feature Robin Barnes & the Fiya Birds, Irvin Mayfield and Primus Roman. On the 600 block, the NOCCA stage will host student bands and alumni performers from the arts high school.<\/p>\n There also will be several art activations. Burning Man aficionado Walker Babington is steering Bed Zeppelin to the 400 block of Julia, in conjunction with the \u201cAltered States\u201d expo. Last seen at Carnival, the contraption features a steampunk-like dirigible made out of mattresses flying above a large gondola that looks like a Victorian bed. Other activations include a projection mapping display, a sculpture garden, a fashion show, moon photos with fstop504 and more.<\/p>\n Besides \u201cAltered States,\u201d Arthur Roger Gallery presents Keith Duncan\u2019s new work featuring New Orleans brass bands, which follows his recent work about the marching bands of historically Black colleges and universities. There also are cast glass installations by Mitchell Gaudet.<\/p>\n Charly Palmer is a fine artist and illustrator who has designed postage stamps and album covers for musicians including John Legend. Stella Jones Gallery presents a show reflecting on his three-decade career.<\/p>\n Octavia Art Gallery presents a show of paintings by Brittany Fanning, Luke Forsyth, Bradley Kerl and Ransome. The brightly painted canvasses explore memory and imagination.<\/p>\n The Ogden Museum of Southern Art opens its 15th annual Louisiana Contemporary expo. The juried show features 50 works by 45 artists from across the state, with 28 artists being included for the first time. This year\u2019s judge was Sarah Jones, the head curator of live art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Admission to Ogden is free during White Linen, and DJ Ram will provide music throughout the night and there\u2019s a cash bar.<\/p>\n In its gallery space, the Contemporary Arts Center presents \u201cIdyll: Summer Pleasures,\u201d a show of paintings, mixed-media works and more exploring visions of summer by 27 artists. There also are totem-like objects with historical and visual narratives of American identity, conceived by Ashley Shaw Scott Adjaye in her project \u201cThe Stories of Us.\u201d<\/p>\n The CAC also hosts the White Linen afterparty in its warehouse space. The dance party features DJs, interactive installations and more. Tickets are $25 via eventbrite.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n During White Linen, Julia Street is lined with bars and food vendors and food trucks, including Southern\u2019s, Lillie\u2019s Cajun Kitchen, Wolf\u2019s Burger Truck, Da Grillmaster Smoke Soul BBQ and more. Bar offerings include special cocktails and daiquiris.<\/p>\n There\u2019s also the indoor Cool Down Lounge at 420 Julia St. with music by DJ chvrchwiig, art activations, live painting and a bar. Admission is $20.<\/p>\n
