I wasn\u2019t mad about the Auto-Tune. Sure, Julian Casablancas kind of sounds like a malfunctioning robot, but what sucked about \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2494916\/the-strokes-announce-new-album-reality-awaits\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Going Shopping<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2498847\/the-strokes-falling-out-of-love\/music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Falling Out Of Love<\/a>\u201d is how utterly forgettable they were. The Strokes are one of this century&#8217;s most important rock bands because they can make a song sound simultaneously lazy and masterful. Today the Strokes&#8217; seventh album is out, and fortunately it&#8217;s not all as uninspired as its advance singles.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, opener \u201cPsycho Shit\u201d is an over-the-top, in-your-face explosion that tries <em>too<\/em> hard. Its unbridled bombardment isn&#8217;t an ideal introduction to this Rick Rubin-produced followup to 2020&#8217;s <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2077879\/the-strokes-the-new-abnormal-review\/reviews\/premature-evaluation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New Abnormal<\/a><\/em>, unless the band is trying to turn away the casual fans who discovered them through \u201cThe Adults Are Talking\u201d on TikTok. Ironically, the very next song, \u201cDine N\u2019 Dash,\u201d is one of the most perfect slices of polished, clean indie rock the band has offered yet.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"Affiliate_wrapper__Jn6B3\" aria-label=\"Affiliate\">\n<div class=\"Affiliate_card__8IpBB\">\n<div class=\"Affiliate_imageSlot__EZuuk\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><button type=\"button\" class=\"Lightbox_trigger__gyjdM\" aria-label=\"Enlarge image\"><\/button><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"Affiliate_title__CLDWL\">The Strokes &#8211; <em>Reality Awaits<\/em> [LP]<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"Affiliate_buyBar__4_a4I\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Reality-Awaits-Strokes\/dp\/B0GWFM6YDH?tag=gum00-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"Affiliate_cta__pCBXJ\"><span>Amazon<\/span><svg class=\"Affiliate_externalIcon__tN3Qw\" viewbox=\"0 0 16 16\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\"><path fill=\"currentColor\" d=\"M5 3v2h5.59L3 12.59 4.41 14 12 6.41V12h2V3H5z\"\/><\/svg><span class=\"Affiliate_srOnly__2Xx8f\">(opens in new window)<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/aside>\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"display:block\">\n<p>When they come through with songs like \u201cDine N\u2019 Dash,\u201d you just have to forgive them for the bullshit. The guitar tone is a gut-punch. Casablancas has that convincing fragility in his voice, which is completely without Auto-Tune. He mumbles, drawls, croons, speaks, strains. It\u2019s so good that you ignore the fact that one of the most famous nepo babies is singing a refrain that goes, \u201cWe could never afford it\/ We would dine and dash\/ I would always go last.\u201d It\u2019s a really good refrain.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, it\u2019s not the only good track on <em>Reality Awaits<\/em>. Auto-Tune returns on \u201cLonely In The Future,\u201d but the sonic momentum warrants its use. It\u2019s a slick, summery nostalgia anthem that\u2019s so catchy, the lyrics name-dropping Anthony Fantano and John Legend don\u2019t really ruin it. Do we even listen to the Strokes for lyrics? You can barely hear what he\u2019s saying anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing To Babble On\u201d is a successfully nonchalant earworm, abandoning Auto-Tune and flaunting refreshing, breezy riffs. It ends with a triumphant guitar solo. \u201cThe Fruits Of Conquest\u201d is another highlight: a mischievous groove that leads to an idiosyncratic quasi-rap from Casablancas that\u2019s just weird enough to work.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of things to love about <em>Reality Awaits<\/em>, and there\u2019s no shortage of duds. But the Strokes wouldn\u2019t be as interesting as they are if everything they touched was gold.
