She\u2019d come of age and left her unhappy childhood home. Ms. Hoop found an abandoned workers\u2019 squat, which she likens to a chicken shack, and fitted it with a bedroll. She cooked outdoors over an open fire. One could euphemistically call it a rustic lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was romantic in a sense, but it was a very lonely period of time,\u201d says Ms. Hoop. She recalls wondering: \u201cWhat do I do with my life? Where are my friends? Where is my family?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"editor-intro row\">\n<h2 class=\"title text-center trinity-skip-it\">Why We Wrote This<\/h2>\n<p class=\"trinity-skip-it\"><span>Distance affords singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop perspective on her country and life. Her new album, \u201cLong Wave Home,\u201d leverages that viewpoint.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Ms. Hoop\u2019s music often explores those very same questions. Her latest album, \u201cLong Wave Home,\u201d focuses on tenuous interpersonal relationships and, relatedly, what constitutes a sense of belonging. As for Ms. Hoop\u2019s existential question about what to do with her life? She found that writing songs offers meaningful fulfillment. They\u2019re a hub for communal experiences with fans around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have a purpose, you have a home, I believe,\u201d says the musician.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Hoop, who was born and raised in Northern California, has lived in many places. During her 20s, she was a wilderness survival guide in a program for troubled teens in Arizona. Hiking in the parched mountains, Ms. Hoop sang for her trail companions but wasn\u2019t yet ready to pursue singing or songwriting as a vocation.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection anonymous\"\/>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a long time to rationalize the notion of putting myself in the center of a room and asking people to pay attention to something that I had created,\u201d says the artist.<\/p>\n<p>After several years of never spending more than six months in one place, including that summer in the Sonoma orchard, Ms. Hoop decamped to Los Angeles for a longer haul. While there, she landed a deal with Columbia Records for her 2007 debut, \u201cKismet.\u201d Not long after, Ms. Hoop moved to Manchester, England, where she has lived for the past 18 years. She has released six more albums, not counting a one-off collaboration with Sam Beam, aka Iron &amp; Wine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no genre that I fit in completely,\u201d says the songwriter, whose self-released \u201cLong Wave Home\u201d was praised by Mojo magazine as \u201cher most assured record yet.\u201d Its inventive arrangements don\u2019t map onto predictable musical topography. The album incorporates orchestration, brass instruments, and a thumb-picked guitar that can almost sound like an African mbira.<\/p>\n<div class=\"in_story_embed embed-object embed-image vertical\">\n<figure class=\"embed ezc-image vertical\">\n<picture>\n\t\t\t<!--[if IE 9]><video style=\"display: none;\"><![endif]--><source media=\"(max-width: 40em)\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2026\/07\/0724_nhoop_guitar.jpg?alias=original_300\"\/><source media=\"(max-width: 64em)\" data-srcset=\"https:https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2026\/07\/0724_nhoop_guitar.jpg?alias=original_600\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 64em)\" data-srcset=\"https:https:\/\/images.csmonitor.com\/csm\/2026\/07\/0724_nhoop_guitar.jpg?alias=original_600\"\/><!--[if IE 9]><\/video><![endif]--><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\n\t\t<\/picture>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"image-data\">\n<div class=\"caption-bar text-wrapper  vertical\">\n<p>Jesca Hoop&#8217;s guitar style is on display on her album &#8220;Long Wave Home.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cShe has an absolutely unique guitar style,\u201d says renowned British music producer John Parish, who helmed Ms. Hoop\u2019s previous two albums, \u201cStonechild\u201d and \u201cOrder of Romance.\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve never worked with another guitar player that has never sort of strummed \u2026 She doesn\u2019t really play chords. It\u2019s all melodies and rhythms, countermelodies and rhythms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One example of that is her recent single \u201cBig Storm.\u201d Propelled by a springy guitar figure and a trampoline drumbeat, the bouncy song chronicles Ms. Hoop\u2019s attempt to escape an unhappy situation by uprooting her life. She sold many of her belongings, including her car, and purchased a one-way plane ticket. When a storm grounded all the flights, she realized that she needed to take responsibility for her happiness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to address what was going on,\u201d she says. \u201cI didn\u2019t end up leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection anonymous\"\/>\n<p>Mr. Parish, who has produced artists such as PJ Harvey, Dry Cleaning, and Tracy Chapman, says that Ms. Hoop\u2019s second-greatest strength is her lyric writing. Her songs often recount incidents from her life with startling candor yet universal resonance.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection\"\/>\n<p>\u201cLong Wave Home\u201d includes two protest songs about former homes that are no longer recognizable. The first, \u201cDesigner Citizen,\u201d offers a wry perspective on America\u2019s politics from an American living on the other side of the Atlantic. \u201cIt causes me to look at what\u2019s going on around us from another angle that I didn\u2019t necessarily have access to from my upbringing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The second, \u201cPlayground,\u201d is an anguished response to a video clip of barefoot children in Gaza playing soccer amid rubble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018I have a song to write,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cLet\u2019s just sing in the kitchen while I cook, and let\u2019s record what I sing. And whatever melody comes out, I\u2019m going to use it exactly as it comes out.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection\"\/>\n<p>Her improvised tune had an unexpected Middle Eastern cadence that she adapted to guitar.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection anonymous\"\/>\n<p>\u201cA song generally takes me about a month to write, of constant writing,\u201d says Ms. Hoop. \u201c\u2018Playground,\u2019 I wrote in two days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The title track of \u201cLong Wave Home\u201d is about how digital screens have interrupted engagement with one\u2019s living environment, family members, and friends. She says the information we see on our devices has both roped people together and led to estrangements because we\u2019re not always communicating with each other directly.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"injection\" data-widget-name=\"body-last-injection\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>One place where people can still commune without digital filters is at concerts. For the itinerant musician, it is a space in which she fulfills purpose. A home away from home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely my favorite place to be,\u201d says Ms. Hoop. \u201cThe stage is one of those timeless places where you are meant to be.
