Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette\u201d was a bright spot for TV \u2014 but was one and done.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe most popular network series is \u201cTracker\u201d on CBS.\u200b Who cares?<\/p>\n
There\u2019s Taylor Sheridan\u2019s \u201cYellowstone\u201d followup \u201cDutton Ranch\u200b,\u200b\u201d which is so huge no one ever mentions it.\u00a0\u201cThe Pitt\u201d has scratched the audience\u2019s itch\u00a0\u200bb\u200by reverting back to\u00a0\u201cER\u201d and \u201c24.\u201d And, for the pinky-out set, there was Ryan Murphy\u2019s miniseries \u201cLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carol\u200byn\u00a0Bessette.\u200b\u201d So lovely and so over.<\/p>\n
\u201cHouse of the Dragon\u201d gets strong numbers for HBO, though not\u200b nearly\u00a0on the level of the final seasons of \u201cGame of Thrones.\u201d And\u00a0\u200bi\u200bt\u2019s hardly a talker, perhaps because the whole story\u2019s outcome is a Google search away.<\/p>\nOne of the biggest TV shows of the year was \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d a gay hockey romance from Canada. HBO Max<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nWhen the Emmy nominations dropped earlier this month, the world cared about them even less than usual. Which is\u00a0\u200bawfully\u00a0hard to do. The\u00a0best<\/em>\u00a0dramas are \u201cYour Friends & Neighbors,\u201d \u201cParadise\u201d and \u201cThe Diplomat\u201d?<\/p>\nOne of the hottest shows of the year, \u201cHeated Rivalry,\u201d wasn\u2019t nominated because\u00a0\u200bn\u200bo\u00a0American company played\u00a0\u200ba part in making it.<\/p>\n
Think about that. One of the biggest new series of the year was a low-budget gay hockey romance from\u00a0Canada<\/em>.<\/p>\nFor a while, it seemed like cheaper reality TV was going to take the reins. Yet the number of unscripted shows on air has dropped by a third since 2022, according to Luminate, a\u200bn\u200bd\u00a0is continuing to fall\u200b precipitously. There\u2019s another dying trend.<\/p>\nThe rest of the year at the movies is promising, starting with \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d next weekend. \u00a9Sony Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nBy comparison, the next five months of movies are a shining beacon\u200b of hope.<\/p>\n
\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day,\u201d which will gross a guaranteed $1 billion plus, hits theaters next week\u200bend. And \u201cDune: Part Three\u201d and \u201cAvengers: Doomsday\u201d open on the very same day in December.<\/p>\n
And\u200b it\u2019s not all franchise tentpoles.\u200bThere\u2019s work by major-draw auteurs. Films from Alejandro I\u00f1\u00e1rritu (\u201cThe Revenant\u201d), Martin McDonagh (\u201cThree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri\u201d) and Zach Cregger (\u201cWeapons\u201d) are coming in the fall.<\/p>\n
Heck, even DC Studios\u2019\u200b psychological horror attempt\u00a0\u201cClayface\u201d looks pretty good.<\/p>\n
Five years ago, Nicole Kidman got poked fun at for her dreamy, viral AMC ad that played in front of the chain\u2019s movies.<\/p>\n
