Princess Anne has paid her respects to Northern Ireland\u2019s Second
\nWorld War dead during her 65th official visit to the province.<\/p>\n
The Princess Royal travelled to County Fermanagh on Thursday for
\na series of engagements, including commemorations marking the 85th
\nanniversary of the Air Training Corps.<\/p>\n
As President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Anne
\nvisited St Tighernach\u2019s Church of Ireland and Sacred Heart Church
\nin Irvinestown, where 86 airmen who died during the Second World
\nWar are buried. She observed moments of reflection at the
\nCommonwealth war graves and met serving Royal Air Force personnel,
\nRAF Air Cadets and local community representatives.<\/p>\n
The visit also included a stop at the Castle Archdale Museum,
\nthe former Royal Air Force flying boat station on Lower Lough Erne.
\nThere, the Princess met relatives of former Women\u2019s Auxiliary Air
\nForce personnel who served at the base, viewed exhibits
\nhighlighting the RAF\u2019s modern capabilities and watched a flypast by
\na Royal Air Force Poseidon aircraft from No. 201 Squadron.<\/p>\n
To mark the occasion, Princess Anne planted an Irish yew tree
\nwithin the museum grounds.<\/p>\n
Earlier in the day, the Princess Royal visited Brooke House
\nHealth and Wellbeing Centre near Fivemiletown, where she spent more
\nthan an hour meeting staff, volunteers and veterans supported by
\nthe charity.<\/p>\n
The centre provides physical and mental health support for
\nserving and retired members of the Armed Forces, police, prison and
\nemergency services, along with their families and carers.<\/p>\n
During a tour of the grounds, Anne visited the centre\u2019s
\ntherapeutic walled garden, where flowers and vegetables are grown
\nas part of wellbeing programmes.<\/p>\n
Head gardener Dougal Dorman said the Princess appeared
\n\u201cgenuinely interested\u201d during the visit, adding: \u201cI got the sense
\nshe was genuinely interested \u2013 I think she\u2019s a gardener.\u201d<\/p>\n
Chief Executive Joan Clements described the royal visit as \u201ca
\nwonderful honour\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are proud to describe Brooke House as an oasis of peace and
\nour sanctuary for healing,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want veterans to know
\nthere is this professional organisation waiting to deliver a whole
\nhost of confidential services to help them overcome their
\nchallenges, aid recovery and develop resilience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wing Commander Chris Hodges, Officer Commanding the RAF Cadets
\nin Northern Ireland, said it had been \u201ca great privilege\u201d to
\nwelcome the Princess Royal as the organisation celebrated its
\nmilestone anniversary.<\/p>\n
Thursday\u2019s visit was Princess Anne\u2019s third to Northern Ireland
\nthis year. Her first official visit came in 1961, when she was just
\n10 years old accompanying the late Queen Elizabeth II.<\/p>\n
