John Cusack <\/b><\/a>made a rare public appearance at San Diego Comic-Con<\/a> to introduce his new graphic novel, Momo.<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I always thought they were the closest things to film, really,\u201d Cusack, 60, told Variety<\/i><\/span><\/a> <\/i>on Friday, July 24. \u201cYou know, you\u2019re picking out shots and they\u2019re so cinematic. I wanted to tell a story, but I didn\u2019t want to negotiate telling a story.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cWhen you ask somebody to put $20 or $30 million into a bank account [to finance a film], they want to have an opinion and they\u2019re afraid and all that stuff. This was, just, I wrote it and, \u2018I like this story.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Cusack independently wrote<\/a> Momo<\/i>, a heist and road trip story set in 1972 with an extraterrestrial twist, that will be distributed by Mad Cave Studios.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got this beautiful, wonderful artist, Ignacio [No\u00e9]<\/b>, to do the illustrations,\u201d he said on Friday. \u201cNobody edited anything I wrote or what he drew, and so, it\u2019s really a piece of work done by two people. \u2026 It was just me and Ignacio\u2019s story, and that doesn\u2019t happen today. It\u2019s an anti-algorithm thing, like, there\u2019s no committee and there\u2019s no computer up in Seattle that\u2019s poll-testing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cusack debuted his first graphic novel at SDCC on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not \u2018on brand.\u2019 It\u2019s more like a brand-buster,\u201d he told Forbes<\/i><\/span><\/a> <\/i>ahead of his panel. \u201cIt is based on a true story. It\u2019s all in recently declassified files that I managed to obtain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cusack, who hinted to Forbes <\/i>that he is already working on a sophomore book with No\u00e9, further detailed his motivation for pivoting into the literary industry.<\/p>\n

Years after This Is Us came to an end, for example, star Chrissy Metz relocated from the City of Angels to Nashville. \u201cI was in L.A. for 21 years, but my family is in Florida, where I\u2019m from, and during the [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cBack when I was starting to make movies, you would find people who had aspirations to do something totally unique, not just installments in a franchise or something that fit their business strategy,\u201d he stated. \u201cI wanted to do something like movies from a different era, and no matter what happens, if someone reads it and likes it, I count that as a success.\u201d<\/p>\n
