SAN DIEGO \u2014 Marvel Studios used its Comic-Con International presentation Saturday to announce David Jonsson as the new Black Panther \u2014 the son of Chadwick Boseman\u2019s T\u2019Challa \u2014 and reveal that Ryan Gosling will be playing Ghost Rider, both in films set for release in 2028.<\/p>\n
Jonsson joined Oscar-winning \u201cBlack Panther\u201d franchise director Ryan Coogler on stage alongside Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, holding his hand to his chest and smiling broadly. \u201cBlack Panther III\u201d is set for release Dec. 15, 2028.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you to this family that I have the honor and the blessing to join. I don\u2019t want to say too much, because I want to let the screen do the talking,\u201d said the 32-year-old actor, known for roles in \u201cIndustry,\u201d \u201cThe Long Walk\u201d and \u201cAlien: Romulus.\u201d<\/p>\n
Boseman died in 2020, and ever since 2022’s \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever\u201d revealed that T\u2019Challa had a son, fans have been playing a guessing game of who might take over the mantle, with Damson Idris and Wright in the mix. The original 2018 \u201cBlack Panther\u201d became the first superhero film to earn a best picture Oscar nomination and made more than $1.3 billion worldwide, while the sequel earned $850 million.<\/p>\n
Gosling will re-team with his \u201cStar Wars: Starfighter\u201d director Shawn Levy on \u201cGhost Rider.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m having the greatest flashback vibes being here,\u201d said Levy in reference to his appearance at Hall H two years ago to promote \u201cDeadpool & Wolverine,” which became a massive hit. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget that night because it was also my real introduction to the greatest fans anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gosling greeted Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige and told the crowd that he\u2019d wanted to play the character for a long time.<\/p>\n
Gosling\u2019s longtime partner, Eva Mendes, starred alongside Nicolas Cage in Cage\u2019s original standalone \u201cGhost Rider\u201d film, released in 2007 \u2014 a year before \u201cIron Man\u201d kicked off Marvel\u2019s cinematic universe. A sequel was released by Sony in 2012, and film rights have since reverted to Marvel, but the character hasn\u2019t appeared yet in the MCU.<\/p>\n
Feige told the crowd that Joe and Anthony Russo\u2019s 2019 film \u201cAvengers: Endgame\u201d will be re-released in theaters on Sept. 25 with new footage linking it to the Russos\u2019 \u201cAvengers: Doomsday,\u201d due out Dec. 18.<\/p>\n
A \u201cDoomsday\u201d trailer played during the panel showed that Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom will have some past tie to Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby). Storm is seen saying that Doom is a broken person who used to be different: \u201cEverything he loved was taken from him.\u201d Later, Richards asks Doom if he’s the one responsible for the horrors around them.<\/p>\n
Downey Jr. joked on stage that Reed and Doom were \u201cbesties.\u201d Fans have been curious about the connection between the two after \u201cThe Fantastic Four: First Steps\u201d post-credit scene included a clip of Doom sitting in Reed and Storm\u2019s living room with their baby.<\/p>\n
\u201cDoomsday\u201d stars taking the stage included Wright, Duke, Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Simu Liu, Danny Ramirez, Anthony Mackie, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Paul Rudd, Rebecca Romijn, David Harbour, Lewis Pullman and Tenoch Huerta.<\/p>\n
Clad in a new gray Deadpool costume, Ryan Reynolds crashed the panel from the audience.<\/p>\n
\u201cLongtime listener. First time caller,\u201d said Reynolds, asking Rudd why Thor was crying in the previous film. Rudd responded \u201cHe\u2019s a Wrexham fan,\u201d in reference to the soccer team that Reynolds co-owns.<\/p>\n
“This seems like an awfully expensive way to announce a film. When do you start filming,\u201d asked Reynolds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s in the can, bro! Did you bump your head?\u201d said Downey Jr. from the stage.<\/p>\n
Many fans waited more than a day to get inside Comic-Con\u2019s most-anticipated panel. Marvel Studios hopes it will act as a reset for its brand, which has been diluted by an overabundance of Disney+ series and critics’ disappointment in films like last year’s \u201cCaptain America: Brave New World.\u201d Though audience interest in superhero films has waned in recent years, \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d \u2014 released by Sony in coordination with Marvel \u2014 is set to dominate the summer box office when it’s released July 31 and ticket pre-sales have been strong for \u201cDoomsday.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
