On July 24, he received the ACLU\u2019s inaugural Ralph Ellison Award for Defenders of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Arts, Business, Science and Sports at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. He played \u201cStreets of Minneapolis\u201d at the ceremony. The following night, he brought his sister Pamela to John Mellencamp\u2019s Greatest Hits tour at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, but didn\u2019t get onstage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPrior to these nine Madison Square Garden shows, Bon Jovi had been off the road for four years while the singer recovered from a severely damaged vocal cord that required surgical intervention. \u201cI\u2019m fully recovered,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/jon-bon-jovi-vocal-cord-recovery-forever-tour-this-is-a-rebirth-exclusive-11998913\">he told <em>People<\/em> in June.<\/a> \u201cIt was longer than I\u2019d ever expected, but it had to be right.
