\u201cLast Week Tonight<\/a>\u201d host John Oliver<\/a> on Sunday exposed what\u2019s so \u201cworrying\u201d about President Donald Trump<\/a> and ethics concerns surrounding his family\u2019s cryptocurrency<\/a> businesses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cIf these conflicts of interest were as easy to understand as Jimmy Carter and his peanut farm, I think there would be a lot more alarm about just how flagrantly corrupt and compromised Trump looks here,\u201d said Oliver, likening Trump\u2019s crypto dealings to Carter turning his business over<\/a> to its trustees in 1977.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThat is why we badly need proper guardrails going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Oliver stressed that Trump has shown a \u201cpretty significant change of heart\u201d toward crypto since 2021, doing a massive 180 from his talk of Bitcoin being a \u201cscam\u201d against the U.S. dollar<\/a> and a \u201cdisaster waiting to happen<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cTrump realized just how much money he personally could end up making from dealing with a speculative asset, because it\u2019s turned out to be a lot,\u201d said Oliver, noting that Trump\u2019s personal income reportedly surged<\/a> to $2.2 billion in 2025, mostly due to his family\u2019s crypto businesses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n After exploring the \u201cabsurd\u201d amount of the Trump family\u2019s crypto-related ventures<\/a>, Oliver said it\u2019s difficult for him to believe the president is unaware<\/a> of deals that could put millions in his sons\u2019 pockets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThe point here is it sure seems like Trump\u2019s exploiting crypto sketchiness for maximum profit, and importantly, at the same time, he\u2019s now making it much easier for others to do the same,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Oliver looked back at a 2024 Bitcoin conference when Trump received massive cheers for vowing<\/a> to fire Gary Gensler \u2014 the Securities and Exchange Commission chair under Joe Biden<\/a> who likened crypto to the \u201cWild West\u201d \u2014 on day one. (Gensler stepped down from his post at the end of Biden\u2019s term.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n The SEC has since \u201ceased up\u201d on more than 60% of the crypto cases that were ongoing when Trump returned to office, The New York Times found in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
