talent, and Victoria Buzz wants to highlight some of the best and brightest local artists and bands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every Monday, there will be a fresh \u2018New Music Monday\u2019 article to help people find and support local artists and bands that are up-and-coming, well established or hidden gems!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this endeavour, Victoria Buzz has partnered with our good friends at <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/4dFEKJP\"><b>CFUV 101.9 FM<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, UVic\u2019s campus radio station, to find and select the musicians and bands for this regular column.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, there have been 84 New Music href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/misstheheart.music\/\"><b>Miss the Heart<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the New Music Monday highlight!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss the Heart is a Victoria-based alternative\/pop-rock duo that was born out of the ashes of its members\u2019 former band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The band is comprised of Kiarra O\u2019Connor on vocals and Michael Voytash on drums, who together used to play in local band Shale.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Connor and Voytash\u2019s collaboration goes all the way back to high school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack when I was in high school, Michael was doing tech for our musical theatre company in Sooke,\u201d O\u2019Connor told Victoria Buzz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was in my Grade 12 year playing Sandy in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grease. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He saw me on the stage and thought it would be a good fit to form a band.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She noted that a couple iterations of bands formed from that connection, and years later, it led the two to start Miss the Heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have gained a lot of knowledge from our previous projects and we were ready to start something with a little more intention and commercial viability\u2014something more thought through.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The duo spent two years writing, recording and getting ready to launch before releasing their first single, \u201cDon\u2019t U Dare\u201d in April of this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following that release, Miss the Heart put out a second single, \u201cNumb Me Out,\u201d in May, before releasing their latest song, \u201cKnow Me Better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, O\u2019Connor says that the hope is that these three tracks will become part of a larger release\u2014either a full-length album or an EP.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy working title for the future EP or album is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m Not Angry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she laughed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReally clearly, in every song, I\u2019m pretty upset about something touching on anger, so I think that will be the underlying theme whether or not it\u2019s a sad song or a happy song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Connor noted that these songs are coming from a place of feminine rage and all the emotions that come with dealing with that rage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She says many of her songs came from a place of confronting a personal period of grief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDealing with a lot of emotions and needing to find a therapeutic release through writing was helpful in general,\u201d explained O\u2019Connor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that the theme of the future album will be grief, but I feel like it\u2019s almost just too heavy of a topic, so it\u2019s nice to deal with all the emotions that surround that main topic in other ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss the Heart\u2019s songs are entirely written by the duo, with Voytash playing drums, guitar, bass and keyboards on their demo tracks before the songs are taken to their producer, Ryan Worsley at Echoplant Recording Studios in Vancouver, who helps them flesh out and refine their sound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLuckily [Worsley] is a very accomplished guitar and bass player, so he took all our demoed versions and basically polished them and made them sound a little bit better,\u201d said O\u2019Connor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She added that for their live shows, they will be bringing on some friends who will play alongside them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe project Miss the Heart is just the duo of me and Michael and we\u2019re going to keep it that way,\u201d she continued. But when we perform live, it\u2019ll be a full-blown rock show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"highlight-track-know-me-better\"><strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/misstheheart.bandcamp.com\/\">Highlight track \u2013 \u201cKnow Me Better\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Connor says that she and Voytash wrote the song together about \u201cbeing played.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019re taking advantage of you, and you kind of let it happen for a time\u2014maybe because you\u2019re naive or because you look for the best in people, but you don\u2019t realize until a little while later that you\u2019ve been played, used or taken advantage of,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThen there\u2019s kind of this coming too of reclaiming that power back and really being able to turn it around\u2014it\u2019s kind of about that catharsis of calling it out as it is after that realization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O\u2019Connor pointed specifically to the line in the song, \u201cyou narcissist,\u201d being especially fun and cathartic to sing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She noted that although this song may seem to be about a scorned lover at first listen, that isn\u2019t necessarily what it is intended to be about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt sounds like the song is coming from the place of a boyfriend [who] screwed me over, but that is not the case,\u201d she laughed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is just a general person kind of screwing you over, and it just so happens to take a relationship tone to it.
