\n\t\u201cSpider-Man<\/a>: Brand New Day\u201d has finally been unveiled to members of the film press, who are calling Tom Holland<\/a>\u2018s fourth standalone movie \u201ca grounded Spider-Man tale\u201d that is \u201cthrilling, heartfelt and confidently character driven.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tFandango correspondent Erik Davis shared a glowing review on X<\/a>, writing that director Destin Daniel Cretton\u2019s sequel \u201cfeels deeper, more thoughtful and more mature than the previous trilogy.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cThat maturity extends beyond the story to the action, with Cretton crafting some of my favorite Spider-Man fight sequences of the Holland era,\u201d he added. \u201cPart detective story, part psychological thriller, part buddy comedy (the Spider-Man\/Punisher banter is so much fun), it stretches in exciting new directions before becoming a genuine love letter to the fans. When you see it, you\u2019ll get it.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tCritic Wendy Lee Szany wrote on X<\/a> that she has \u201cno notes\u201d for \u201cBrand New Day,\u201d which delivered \u201ctop-tier action\u201d and a few \u201ctearjerker\u201d moments. <\/p>\n \n\tTV host and entertainment journalist Brandon Pope echoed the praise. He wrote in his X review<\/a>, \u201c\u2018Spider-Man: Brand New Day<\/a>\u2018 may be the most Marvel Marvel movie I\u2019ve ever marveled. Destin Daniel Cretton honors beloved Spider-Man media \u2014 especially Raimi \u2014 to create something soulful + thrilling. Hulk, Punisher deliver. Big reveal lives up. The best of the Tom Holland Spidey series.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tFilm critic Peter Howell likewise adored the Marvel sequel. He wrote on X<\/a> that \u201cBrand New Day\u201d cut back on the \u201cmultiverse tedium to give us a grounded Spider-Man tale that\u2019s back to the city roots of the comic book hero we knew and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cTom Holland finally nails the sarcasm, angst and love hassles of Spidey\/Peter Parker as Stan Lee first envisioned the character,\u201d Howell added. \u201cThe film negotiates the emotional landmines left by \u2018Spider-Man: No Way Home\u2019 five years ago while a seriously scary villain emerges in the person of a malevolent telepath. Tom Holland has never been better and the Spidey-Punisher pairing is pure gold. Destin Daniel Cretton outdoes himself, but the script is the real superhero- thrilling, heartfelt and confidently character driven.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHolland returns as Peter Parker\/Spider-Man in \u201cBrand New Day,\u201d which is set four years after the events of \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home.\u201d That movie ended with Doctor Strange casting a spell in which Peter is erased from everyone\u2019s memory, so now the web-slinger is fighting crime in New York City without the support of MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). A new threat emerges in the form of Sadie Sink\u2019s mysterious villain at the same time as Peter\u2019s spider powers begin evolving beyond his control. The supporting cast includes Mark Ruffalo as Hulk and Jon Bernthal as Punisher.<\/p>\n \n\tExpectations for \u201cBrand New Day\u201d are sky high after 2021\u2019s \u201cNo Way Home\u201d became a pop culture sensation with $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office. It was Holland\u2019s second billion-dollar-grossing \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movie after 2019\u2019s \u201cFar From Home\u201d earned $1.1 billion on the heels of \u201cAvengers: Endgame.\u201d While Marvel has had its ups (\u201cDeadpool and Wolverine\u201d) and downs (\u201cCaptain America: Brave New World\u201d) in recent years, \u201cBrand New Day\u201d should get the MCU back on strong box office footing ahead of December\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Doomsday.\u201d<\/p>\n \n\tHolland played a greater role in the development of \u201cBrand New Day\u201d compared to his previous \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movies. He took deep dives on the internet to understand what exactly Spider-Man fans wanted to see in his latest outing as Marvel\u2019s iconic web-slinger, then took these fan ideas directly to studio executives and the movie\u2019s screenwriters.<\/p>\n \n\t\u00a0\u201cWhat\u2019s been really fun about this most recent movie is designing the suit and being a part of that process and understanding what we wanted to try and achieve,\u201d Holland told LADbible<\/a> about having greater involvement in the movie\u2019s development this time around.<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cI have been actively sifting through the internet and trying to best understand what it is that the fans want from a \u2018Spider-Man\u2019 movie, and that\u2019s been my driving force in these pitch meetings,\u201d he added. \u201cI think the producers, at times were like, absolutely sick of me, but I think it\u2019s really important, because we make these movies for [the fans].\u201d<\/p>\n \n\t\u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d opens in theaters nationwide July 31.
