In theaters July 31.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The entire world has forgotten about Peter Parker.<\/p>\n<p>However, back in our reality, the planet has definitely not blanked on \u201cSpider-Man.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even taking into account the Marvel Cinematic Universe\u2019s crises in recent years, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/02\/22\/marvel-movies-infuriating-fans-will-the-mcu-finally-die\/\">both creative and financial<\/a>, and the long five-year gap since he was last onscreen, Spidey firmly remains the best thing they\u2019ve got.<\/p>\n<p>I attend Marvel movies with the same enthusiasm of receiving hospital test results, and I still can\u2019t quit the webslinger.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And so seeing Tom Holland\u2019s Peter don the red-and-blue suit again in the very satisfying \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day\u201d is a welcome reunion, although he\u2019s no longer the happy-go-lucky hero he once was.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Starting with \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/07\/05\/tom-hollands-spider-man-is-the-four-star-wall-crawler-weve-been-waiting-for\/\">Homecoming<\/a>,\u201d the first trilogy was lovable, candy-colored teen movies. No. 2, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/06\/27\/spider-man-far-from-home-is-more-teen-comedy-than-action-movie\/\">Far From Home<\/a>,\u201d was practically a PG-13 \u201cEuroTrip.\u201d And the epic, Multiversal finale, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/14\/spider-man-no-way-home-review-mcu-movie-will-shock-fans\/\">No Way Home<\/a>,\u201d still popped, but the plates shifted in the end with the tragic death of Marisa Tomei\u2019s Aunt May and Dr. Strange\u2019s consequential spell that erased Peter from everyone\u2019s memory \u2014 including his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon).<\/p>\n<p>Half a decade later, \u201cBrand New Day\u201d may sound like a Brady Bunch song, but it\u2019s a much darker and more mature movie in look and feel from what came before. It\u2019s both a continuation of the character and a necessary restart of the series.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Spider-Man returns for the first time since 2021\u2019s \u201cNo Way Home\u201d in \u201cSpider-Man: Brand New Day.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Sony Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The personality change of the film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton of the forgotten \u201cShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,\u201d begins straight away with an emotional narration from Peter. He\u2019s reading a letter to MJ he plans to one day deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Peter explains their past, hopes that he\u2019ll see her again and that she\u2019ll remember him when he does.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUntil then,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019m just gonna be Spider-Man.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And that right there is the campaign slogan of \u201cBrand New Day.\u201d Spidey is not a globe-and-galaxy-trotting Avenger anymore \u2014 he\u2019s returned to being a friendly neighborhood vigilante in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Praise be.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>At the start of the movie, the world has collectively forgotten about Peter Parker (Tom Holland). <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Sony Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Instead of reporting to Tony Stark or Nick Fury, ever-anonymous Peter works alongside Detective DeWolff (Liza Col\u00f3n-Zayas) thwarting crimes in the five boroughs. Sometimes they\u2019re thugs, sometimes they\u2019re known villains like Scorpion (Michael Mando).<\/p>\n<p>His reputation has gotten a boost in this second life, too. The police love him, and locals revere him. NY1\u2019s Pat Kiernan reports that, thanks to Spidey, crime rates have dropped to a record low.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet a strange new foe has challenged Peter\u2019s formidable abilities. Not exactly a shocking plot twist, I know. The baddie is an eerie force that can hop between bodies, thus making them next to impossible to chase down. Its voice jumps cooly from body to body, like Agent Smith in \u201cThe Matrix.\u201d And when their identity is revealed, the fanboys will wheeze and gasp.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Spider-Man is back to vanquishing New York villains such as Scorpion (Michael Mando). <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Sony Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Peter is tasked by Bill Metzger (Tramell Tillman, doing his mysterious \u201cSeverance\u201d thing) of the Department of Damage Control with stopping the evildoer, who is trying to access the secret contents of a safe.<\/p>\n<p>Spider-Man teams up with the trigger-happy Punisher (Jon Berthal, brash and funny) and also seeks the advice of Professor Bruce Banner aka the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Hulk no remember Peter either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s some drama at home at his crummy, single-dude apartment. Peter\u2019s arachnid DNA is asserting itself more and he starts going through dangerous hormonal changes. Bit of a late bloomer. No shame in that.<\/p>\n<p>And he has increasing run-ins with MJ and Ned. This time, the sparks between the couple really shoot off the screen with the heavier material, and raw and vulnerable Holland in particular does his best acting of the franchise. \u201cSpider-Man\u201d has always more about characters than action set pieces. <\/p>\n<p>Tonally, \u201cBrand New Day\u201d is a lot more like Tobey Maguire\u2019s aughts films, which to my mind are not only the gold standard of \u201cSpider-Man\u201d movies, but Marvel films as well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fun though Peter\u2019s high-school years were, there\u2019s a compelling weightiness to him re-evaluating his great power and responsibility from the perspective of an adult.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Holland and Zendaya\u2019s chemistry onscreen is as strong as it is off. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Columbia Pictures\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What especially reminded me of Maguire\u2019s stint is a moving scene in \u201cBrand New Day\u201d when New Yorkers rally around Spider-Man. Members of the crowd hold up \u201cNew York Hearts Spidey\u201d signs and the Empire State Building\u2019s lights change to blue and red. It\u2019s nostalgically \u201cGhostbusters\u201d-y.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a useful lesson for superhero films in that.
