Tori Spelling, and David Silver, Brian Austin Green, while eating pizza and hearing about their lives was incredible,\u201d he says, referring to their characters. \u201cIt was like a dream-come-true experience.\u201d<\/p>\n Of Spelling, he adds, \u201cShe knows her food. She knows her pizza. And that was the most exciting part of the journey, to know that we\u2019re not just talking about 90210<\/em>. We\u2019re talking about this girl\u2019s love of pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n Green tells PEOPLE participating in the project didn\u2019t sway his view that New York pizza reigns supreme, but he agreed to be in it because of his admiration for Ferriero, whose previous food documentaries include Her Name Is Chef <\/em>and Sorry, We\u2019re Closed<\/em>. The pair formed a friendship through Green\u2019s visits to Ferriero\u2019s podcast.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he has a really cool eye for things and for these really fun concepts,\u201d Green says. \u201cAnd I thought the concept was really interesting. I mean, it\u2019s gutsy because I honestly don\u2019t even know how much of a debate it is between New York and Los Angeles Pizza.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s important to highlight that there are good things across the country and that we should just sit back and enjoy each other a little more and enjoy these fun takes,\u201d Green adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n Green, whose own L.A. favorites include D\u2019Amores, Dtown and Numero Uno Tavern, reflected on why pizza makes a compelling documentary subject.<\/p>\n Brooke Williamson and Pete FerrieroCredit: Marilyn Espitia<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cIt\u2019s very simple, a lot of it, but then people really take pride in the preparation of it and the life around it,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it is something that can be shared and enjoyed and families have pizza night and there\u2019s something really communal about pizza to me.\u201d<\/p>\n Ferriero says the inspiration for the film came from a disparaging comment he heard about L.A. pies.<\/p>\n \u201cSomeone from New Jersey said, \u2018The hardest thing probably for you is that you can\u2019t get any good pizza in LA,\u2019\u201d he recalls. \u201cAnd I got greatly offended by the statement, so I said, \u2018No, not only can I get great pizza in LA, the best pizza is in LA.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Pete Ferriero and Stephanie IzardCredit: Pete Ferriero<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n \u201cAnd then I thought about that and was like, \u2018I think I want to set out to prove that the best pizza is in Los Angeles,\u2019\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n Ferriero also wants to highlight how diverse the L.A. culinary scene is, pointing out that he can find \u201cany type of pizza\u201d there, including New York, Detroit and New Haven styles.<\/p>\n Ferriero cast several prominent chefs and personalities from the food world, including Brooke Williamson<\/a>, Stephanie Izard and Joe Sasto<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think she\u2019s the greatest champion of all time,\u201d he says of Williamson, who won season 14 of Top Chef <\/em>and season 1 of Tournament of Champions<\/em>. \u201cAnd Joe Sasto is such a good character, and always down to do some fun stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n Joe Sasto and Pete FerrieroCredit: Pete Ferriero<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n Nancy Silverton, the James Beard Award-Winning chef and co-owner of Pizzeria Mozza,<\/strong> also appears in the film.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve been obsessed with Nancy Silverton forever,\u201d Ferriero says. \u201cSo when that dude said to me, \u2018Oh, you can\u2019t find good pizza in LA,\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, my favorite pizza is in LA. It\u2019s at Nancy Silverton\u2019s.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBut then when I got to actually talk to Nancy Silverton and sit with her, which was as equal of a dream of talking to Donna Martin in different ways, that to me was amazing because you get to really understand a chef\u2019s love of the craft,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd that also, what I\u2019m saying about LA having the best pizza, it\u2019s not totally crazy because chefs are agreeing like, \u2018No, this is really good. I like this one better than I like the one in New York,\u2019 so it was very validated,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n
