Saturday marks the start of Black History Month, and the Yakima Valley Libraries is planning a presentation about local Black pioneers on Saturday at the new Union Gap library.

Yakima’s Diverse History
The Union Gap Library, 108 W. Ahtanum Road, will celebrate Black History Month with a presentation from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1.
Attendees will learn about local Black pioneers and their families in the Yakima Valley and beyond. Historical topics presented will include mining, church and school history, art and the development of local community organizations.
Yakima’s Diverse History is presented by Carlos Pelley, the Yakima Valley Libraries archivist and special collections librarian.
Symphony concert
The Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s “Gaelic Celebration” will celebrate the musical heritage of Ireland and Scotland, starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at The Capitol Theatre, 19 S. Third St.
The classical concert will include John Williams’ score from “Far and Away,” Max Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy” and the “Gaelic Symphony” by Amy Beach. The evening will feature Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim on violin.
Theatre doors open at 6:15 p.m. for ConcerTalk which starts at 6:25 p.m. Learn about the evening’s music with YSO principal horn player and Central Washington University School of Music professor Dr. Jeffrey Snedeker.
Tickets start at $16 and can be purchased online at capitoltheatre.org, calling 509-853-2787 or during box office hours, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to showtime on show days.
Poetry Out Loud
The Central Washington Regional Poetry Out Loud competition will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Yakima Valley College Kendall Hall Auditorium, Building 12, 1015 S. 16th Ave.
Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation competition for high school students supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and managed by ArtsWA in Washington state.
Competitors learn public speaking skills, build self-confidence, connect with literature and discover new avenues for creative expression.

Central Washington Wedding and Event Expo
Find everything and more for your upcoming wedding, party or event at the 2025 Central Washington Wedding and Event Expo, from noon-4 p.m. Sunday at the Yakima Valley SunDome, 1301 S. Fair Ave.
Over 100 vendors will be showcasing upcoming trends and services to help create the wedding, quinceañera or any other special event of your dreams. Booths will feature gowns and formal wear, photography, catering and more.
The day also will feature live multi-cultural entertainment from 1-3 p.m., including traditional and ceremonial dances honoring life events such as coming of age, courtship, marriage and more.
The day ends with a wedding and quinceañera fashion show starting at 3 p.m.
The event will also include a men’s fashion show, door prizes, raffle drawings, food trucks and more. Guests can take break in the beer and wine garden supporting the Yakima Humane Society.
