Here’s the latest on Jackson’s efforts to reopen Thalia Mara Hall

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – A new chiller should be installed next week at Thalia Mara Hall – a sign Jackson is making progress in getting the facility reopened.

The city provided its second update on those efforts late Thursday, more than a month and a half after the municipal auditorium was shut down to mold growth.

On Thursday, the new chiller arrived. That will be used to replace the one that shut down back in July, leading to the mold growth.

Also on September 19, a second hygienic test was conducted at the facility.

So far, Jackson has received one quote for remediation work at the hall and is seeking additional quotes from other companies.

“We still do not know when remediation will begin and have not yet received the completed proposals,” the website states. “We also have requested proposal revisions from the first company to address new findings by Mr. Al-Turk, a city-contracted engineer.”

Al-Turk is Emad Al-Turk. The council hired his firm earlier this year to help supplement the Public Works Department until a new city engineer can be brought on.

It was not known what findings Al-Turk discovered. Jackson Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne again denied our request for an interview.

Meanwhile, the city is acknowledging the results of a recent inspection by the State Fire Marshal.

That inspection occurred on September 9, after life-threatening issues were reported at the hall.

A report released the following day showed there were 22 violations of the International Fire Code found at the building, including expired fire extinguishers, blocked exit points, and open electrical boxes.

The city is planning to submit a response document to the agency by September 21.

As for the new chiller, it will have the capacity to cool 65 percent of a full house, meaning it should help carry the hall through the cooler fall, winter, and spring months.

A chiller is one component of an HVAC unit. It cools the air by allowing it to go over coils of cold water, before pushing it into the air duct system.

The hall was closed on August 1, after the chillers there quit working. The heat, coupled with the moisture and humidity there, led to a fungal infestation.

Deputy Director of Human and Cultural Resources Mike Williams told the council the air conditioning in the facility had been operating at 25 percent capacity for a decade.

During last year’s International Ballet Competition, temporary chillers had to be brought in as a result to help supplement that equipment.

One of the hall’s chillers failed weeks or months ago, the second one failed in late July.
