Jackson officials provide update on Thalia Mara Hall

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Jackson has sought quotes from two remediation companies to clean up Thalia Mara Hall, weeks after the facility was shut down due to mold growth.

On Thursday, the city provided an update on efforts to reopen the facility via the city’s website.

The city expects to receive the remaining quotes for remediation efforts in the coming week. Once a firm is chosen, the cleanup could take between four to eight weeks.

The update comes nearly a month and a half after the municipal auditorium was shut down after microbial growth was found there. Since then, multiple high-profile shows, including two for internationally known comedian Kevin Hart, have been canceled.

A timeline for Thalia Mara is shown below:

  • 7/29 – Management informed upper management about mold in the building.
  • 7/30 – The first remediation team (Turnkey) arrived for a preliminary assessment.
  • 8/1 – Turnkey recommended a larger remediation company for commercial spaces.
  • 8/1 – Larger remediation company (Belfor) referred the city to a certified hygienist for further testing.
  • 8/9 – CTEH conducts testing.
  • 8/14 – CTEH’s report received by city; shared with “internal team.”
  • 8/19 – City conducts walkthrough with remediation team/contractors for scope of work assessment.
  • 8/27 – City releases CTEH report to Jackson City Council, public.
  • 9/4 – Scope assessment document and cost estimate received from Belfor.
  • 9/6 – New chiller order is completed; shipping is scheduled.
  • 9/6 – Kevin Hart, Kansas, and Wheel of Fortune all cancel upcoming shows at Thalia Mara.
  • 9/6 – Auditorium manager tells WLBT she’s been warning the city of conditions at the facility for months.
  • 9/9 – Mayor refutes claims city neglected Thalia Mara; says Jackson hasn’t had the money.
  • 9/10 – WLBT investigation reveals the city had access to nearly $2 million in state funding for the auditorium for months but failed to draw down on it.
  • 9/11 – Site evaluation with two additional remediation companies to obtain quotes.

Jackson Director of Communications Melissa Faith Payne denied our request to interview Mike Williams, the city’s deputy director of Human and Cultural Services, saying the online update would be the only information provided.

WLBT also contacted Williams directly, but he has yet to respond to our requests for comment.
