So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

We’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with Marcus both in Joni’s living room & on many a summer festival jam, so this felt like such a natural pairing. His beautifully distinct and soulful voice shines so brightly on this song, and it was such a treat to have him be a part of it.”

VILLAGERS – “I WANT WHAT I DON’T NEED”
Villagers’ new album The Golden Time is out this Friday, and he’s shared a final advance single, “I Want What I Don’t Need.” Conor O’Brien calls it “a little tragicomedy about the concept of free will, intellectual humility and the commodification of sacred things. As with all the songs from the album, a yearning for transcendence at the dawn of the internet age is at its core. We’re constantly being bombarded by ideas, images and products telling us that our internal directives are insufficient; that we need external support or validation in order to become whole beings. The song pokes fun at this: And I’ll wed myself to my beliefs / And they’ll harden like my arteries / And I’ll take myself so seriously / And I’ll want what I don’t need.”
—

COLA – “ALBATROSS”
“This song had a few lives before it took its final form,” says Cola’s Tim Darcy of “Albatros,” the new single off the band’s upcoming album The Gloss. “We played a much faster version on some later Deep in View tours with different lyrics. When we eventually got to the studio we revisited Ben’s original demo and decided to slow it down and re-introduce a heavier feeling. I then had a spark of inspiration and completely rewrote the lyrics, which center around “an albatross”–something that greatly hinders accomplishment. From there I started thinking about a horse race and perhaps some trainer watching a slow motion replay to try identify what’s wrong with an animal’s stride, hence the chorus.”
—

CMAT – “AW, SHOOT!”
Irish iconoclast CMAT is back with this very catchy new single. “So there I was, in Paris, France, in a rented flat,” CMAT says. “I was trying to write songs but it wasn’t going very well at all. I was drinking three bottles of wine a day (Cote du Provence) and I didn’t have any human contact for maybe two weeks, and I was going a little bit crazy, voices in my head etc etc. One evening there was a knock at the door. Who could it be?! I opened the door to find an American girl, who said the following: “Oh! You’re not my friend!” and then turned and walked away. Turns out she got the floors mixed-up, American system vs European flooring system. This was actually a seminal plot point in my favourite tv show Emily in Paris. And then? Well, I properly lost my mind. But on the bright side, I got a banger out of it!”
—
FALTYDL – “MINDS PROTECTION”
Drew Lustman has announced new FaltyDL album In the Wake of Wolves which will be out June 7 via Central Processing Unit. “It came to me in a revelation after rediscovering classic Squarepusher cuts like ‘Theme From Ernest Borgnine’ and ‘Tundra.’ Songs from my youth,” Lustman says of the album’s skittering first single. “It came together really quickly in the studio with lots of send FX automation and general pulverization on the master channel. Fuck it up! Play with the excess area over %100 wet on FX and manipulate the feedback. That’s what Squarepusher told me when we met in 2015.”

But overall somehow the night and the interaction is still pretty cute.” New album Night Reign is out May 31.
