Late into the night on Aug. 3 – or early the next morning to be exact – during a Lollapalooza After Show at Thalia Hall in Chicago, The Last Dinner Party vocalist Abigail Morris explained that the last time the London rockers played at midnight, they were in front of an Irish crowd that responded rowdily.
“Can Chicago be more utterly feral than Dublin? Let’s find out,” she said before leading the group in a raucous performance of their alluring single “Nothing Matters” to close out the set.
“When you’re with us there’s always something to celebrate,” she added raising a glass of champagne to toast the freeing mantra of the song.
Utterly feral doesn’t begin to describe the energy exuding from the sold-out crowd as the entire audience – many of whom wore flowing dresses and ribbons in their hair matching the group’s baroque fashion aesthetic – danced as they screamed the chorus, with their arms raised in the air. While the encore – which also included a mesmerizing rendition of the new, menacing murder ballad “The Killer” – sent the decibel levels to such great heights, the entire show was filled with opportunities to sway, sing, and even cry.
“This is the portion of our set that we like to refer to as ‘the weeping hour,’” Morris explained before the band dove into “On Your Side.” “It only lasts a minute. It’s not very painful, unless you need it to be. If you’ve had any particular heartbreak or guttural pain this week, this is the portion in which to cry or wail or beat your chest or howl. Do that now, because you won’t have time for any of that later. Because it just descends into violence, dancing, sex, and we won’t have time for crying.”
The Last Dinner Party – comprised of Morris, Lizzie Mayland (guitar), Emily Roberts (lead guitar), Georgia Davies (bass), and Aurora Nishevci (keys), along with touring drummer Casper Miles – spent most of the set sharing songs from their stellar debut album, Prelude to Ecstasy, which was released via Island Records earlier this year. “Sinner” – which featured a shredder of a solo from Roberts had everyone moving while the entire crowd sang the lyrics, “Give me the strength,” in unison during “Portrait of a Dead Girl.”
There were also a few surprises throughout the night. After King Isis – who opened the show backed by a full band – shared a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” The Last Dinner Party answered with a cover of their own, “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us.” The Sparks song found Morris exploring the venue’s opera-style boxes, practically hanging over the rails as she sang, “This town ain’t big enough for both of us / And it ain’t me who’s gonna leave.”
The band also gave a sneak peak at another new song, “Big Dog,” a ferocious rocker that promises good things to come from their highly-anticipated second album. “My Lady of Mercy” and “The Feminine Urge” were further highlights of the performance.
Fans who missed this wild night are in luck as The Last Dinner Party are scheduled to take the stage at Lollapalooza in Grant Park later today (Sunday, Aug. 4) for a 5:45 p.m. set on the Tito’s Handmade Vodka Stage.
